“No, no, no. You’re here under duress.”

She traced a finger down his throat and watched his Adam’s apple bob with satisfaction. The roughness of the beard gave way to smooth, hot skin. “I was here under duress, but now I’m here with huge compensation.”

He closed his eyes. “My god, that’s worse.”

“You’re not paying me for sex. You’re paying me for time.”

“How is that different?”

“You’re paying me for time, and I’m giving you sex. Or rather, I’m taking it. Would you just shut up and kiss me? This is the most difficult seduction ever.” A horrible thought occurred. “Unless— You’re not?—”

His lips were on hers before she could finish her sentence. He mashed them into her teeth almost violently before he gentled the kiss and pulled back. “You’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen in my life.”

“Okay, that’s a little much. Dial it back.”

“You are,” he said with such guilelessness she almost believed him. She didn’t want to believe him. She didn’t want to be the most anything for him. She didn’t want him to be the most gorgeous man she had ever seen. She didn’t want special. This day had been special in far too many ways.

“This is nothing. Just fun.”

He didn’t agree or disagree, just cupped her face in both hands and kissed her reverently.

He tasted as good as he smelled. How was that possible? When his tongue danced with hers, she nearly lost her mind. When he deepened the kiss, she slumped, and the horse shied.

“Terrible idea,” he said as he broke the kiss.

“Stop saying terrible. A girl could get a complex.”

“Fabulous. Spectacular,” he corrected quickly with another intoxicating grin. “One night out of time.”

Why did that feel disappointing? She specialized in one-night stands. She loved the variety and the lack of commitment. She loved learning new tips and tricks. She didn’t do long-term or commitment like the rest of her cousins that shacked up forever the moment they could. She played the field, and she was happy that way.

But with Aiden? One night was never going to be enough. So she would just have to make it count.

She cast about for poetic words to convince him, and as usual, words failed her, so she let her lips and her body do the talking. She ran her hands down his back to the waistband of his jeans, which gaped slightly without their button. It gave her the perfect amount of room to slide lower.

She was floating. In seconds, she realized that wasn’t metaphorical. He’d lifted her right off the ground.

Immediately, he put her down. “Sorry.”

“If you apologize one more time, I’m gonna come back far in the future, and you’re gonna get another face of molasses.”

He cocked one eyebrow. “Promise?”

She nipped his lower lip. “Double promise.”

He drank her down for a few seconds before ripping his mouth away and staring into the sky. “That’s still not a thing.”

“What’s the problem now?” she asked, unable to keep the whine from her voice.

“My wolf is a little out of control.”

She squinted at him. She’d seen his beast, huge and menacing, but she’d also seen him take a lot of damage without inflicting a single bite of harm. “I don’t believe you.”

Both eyebrows went up. “You saw him.”

She shook her head. “Are you saying that I’m gonna end up with some kind of wolf bite and poisoned by the end of the night?”

“God no!”
