What was Nathan doing here? And what was he talking about?Hehad been expecting more witches?Nathanhad planned this?

Which meant Nathan had closed the wards.

He was still talking, but Aiden couldn’t hear over his rage. How dare he? What was he thinking?

He was thinking that he’d rather start a war than try to make this right. He’d doubled down, threw his son under the bus, and kept Goldie locked up.

Aiden caught a whiff of lust. Nathan didn’t keep her to avoid a war; the old goat kept her for himself.

Predictably, Goldie didn’t shrink from the older shifter. She got right up in his face. “You’re a disgrace to shifters everywhere.”

Nathan twitched, and Aiden was between them in half a heartbeat.

He was beyond surprised not to taste blood. Strangely, he felt more in control, not less.

He thought he might even be able to…

He was human again in a breath. How did we do that?

The wolf grumbled, wanting to attack—but not with the mindless rage of an out-of-control beast.

“Hey, Aiden,” Goldie said, looking self-conscious. “Should you be here?”

Her fear tore at him. “I shouldn’t be anywhere else!”

“Aiden—” she said with such anguish.

“It will be okay,” he said softly, amazed he could be soft in the face of his true enemy: not a mannerless boy, but a deranged wolf.

“I’m good,” Goldie said in a high, fast voice. “Maybe go home where there are pretty wards. If he hurts you…”

“What about me hurting him?” Aiden asked, outraged on behalf of his wolf.

“Why do you waste your time on the defect who can’t control his wolf?” Nathan asked. “I’m the strongest wolf in the pack.”

Aiden’s wolf reared within him, refocused on the true threat. So focused, Aiden almost missed the larger implication of that statement.

Nathan wasn’t the strongest wolf in the pack, but it was close enough that it would have to be settled by blood. He wanted a witch to ensure the outcome of that fight.

“You think we can’t tell who the strongest wolf is?” Goldie asked. “We are the ones that made you. We know everything about you.”

Aiden gaped at Goldie. What was she trying to gain by bluffing?

“Aiden Scott is the son of a witch and a shifter with more power than you can summon in your life, with an international career, a house full of priceless antiques, and a wolf who can defy anyone’s dominance. What more power could you want? And you think I want a washed-up nobody or a boy with nothing?” She flung her hand between Nathan and the horse trailer. Aiden realized Buck was in the horse trailer. How had she gotten him in there?

Stalking prey, the wolf sent him. It meant focus.

She kept insisting hewas the strongest wolf in the pack. He sighed. If only that were true.

“Maybe you’re right about him,” Nathan said with a light in his eyes.

Aiden frowned. He’d expected fury or at least a defense of his golden child.

“Maybe I take him down,” Nathan said, “and finally prove to you who the real power is.”

“Over my dead body,” Aiden said.

“Promise?” Nathan asked with a sneer.
