Goldie gave a slow clap, surprising Aiden again. Nobody here had learned their lines about the proper way to threaten anyone.

“I appreciate the bravado,” Goldie said, “one shit stirrer to another. Here’s my promise. You lose your son.”

Nathan lunged, and Aiden pushed him back, feeling his canines cut his tongue.

“What?” a voice screamed from inside the trailer.

Give me two minutes,he begged the beast.

“I’m not gonna kill Buck,” Goldie said. “I’m not like you. You got a bunch of kids to believe they can take what they want from the world. Congratulations. When I’m done, not one of them will follow you anywhere.”

Nathan laughed, trying to reassert his dominance over the conversation, but it had a maniacal edge to it.

What was Goldie saying? It sounded like she had claimed a huge chunk of his pack. “Darling, consider what you’re saying.”

She tapped her chin for two seconds. “Considered it. Stand by it.”

“You just waved red in front of a predator. And wolves can’t even see red.”

She didn’t react.

“Bit off more than you can chew,” he continued. “Stepped on a wasp’s nest.”

“I understood the first one. You don’t have to keep metaphoring me.” She looked at the sky. “I had to fall for a damn writer.”

He froze. “You had tofall for?”

She looked at him with a glowing smile. “Lose one’s heart, fancy, tumble head over heels. Understand?”

He nodded dumbly.

“Him? The submissive defect?” Nathan asked, genuinely disgusted.

“Goldie,” he said, emotion choking his voice.

“Yeah?”

He took one step toward Goldie and away from Nathan.

The older man shifted, and Aiden’s wolf took him before he could reach her.

His wolf snapped its teeth on the older man’s neck and growled when he only caught fur. The older wolf’s claws raked down his front. Fire followed in their wake. Nathan had licked his claws, coating them with poison. Through the horrifying pain, Aiden cursed him.

They circled as Goldie shouted something from behind him, but he was losing the ability to understand words. The wolf was ascendant, defending its mate. His wolf circled again and feinted toward the bigger wolf, more careful this time since Nathan’s claws were as deadly as his teeth.

A stone hit the beast, and Aiden took advantage of his distraction to go for the jugular again. Somehow, the old wolf twisted away.

Aiden backed up to see Goldie gathering stones from the path. They were tiny and wouldn’t cause a lick of harm, but it was an excellent distraction.

Nathan slammed into their side, and they rolled away.

Don’t you get distracted,he told his wolf.

They climbed to their feet and fought off another attack. Another claw swiped a trail of fire across their flank, but not as bad as the one. Most of the poison was in that first wound.

They dashed toward Nathan again and managed to get their teeth around the joint in his shoulder, not quite a lock on his neck, but close enough. Their teeth didn’t break the skin, just forced the older wolf toward the floor.

What are you doing?he asked the wolf, amazed. He hadn’t wanted to kill his kin, but his wolf had never shown any restraint before.
