“Terrified.” Then he kissed me. I clung to him, needing the comfort before he pulled away. “I’ll let the boss know we’re working a half day to prepare for Kieran’s heat, alright?”

We exited the car and made our way around the back of the range school. We had been working on building the training sets and training newbies on what to look for as they traveled through the woods. I usually spent most of my time on the trails but had pulled back just in case there was an emergency at home and fuck, it felt like there was one even though we had only left half an hour ago.

As long as we completed the sets we had agreed to build and showed up for the training classes, we were left to our devices.

Isaias pulled up beside me, his lips pursed to say something when his phone vibrated. Both of us stared at his pocket, myhackles raised when he slid it out and answered. “Zahria? Who's phone is this? What’s going on with the case?”

A few seconds of heavy breathing filtered through the speaker before she spoke. “My work phone. Goddamnit, they let him go.”

“What?” I yelled out, not caring who was around us.

“Fuck, Isaias—Joel—they fucking let him go last night. Another slap on the wrist. I didn’t even know he was gone until I came in this morning.”

A rough growl ripped through my Alpha’s chest as we raced back toward the car. “And you’re just telling me this shit?” He barked. Fear raced through my veins as I hurriedly dialed Ren’s phone. No answer.

Kieran wasn’t answering either but both of them were still half-asleep when we left. Nala didn’t have a phone and we hadn’t invested in a landline. Shit. I sent a group text, telling them to lock the fucking doors and stay in the back room as if that would save them from anything.

Zahria let out an angry sigh. “Believe me, I would have called sooner if I could but I jumped in the car with Xylo as soon as we heard and took off. I don’t have anything on me so we had to call the station for your number. Fuckers wouldn't tell me so we called Emsboro's station the moment they got in.”

“What happened to Xylo’s phone?”

“Got a little angry and it doesn’t work anymore,” Xylo forced out.

Isaias revved the engine, speeding down the road. I hoped we’d get there in time but we were always one step too late with that fucking Alpha. Isaias’ knuckles whitened as he gripped the steering wheel, taking dangerously sharp turns to get us back to our family. “Does POCA sound familiar?” He asked but it came out more like a bark and a command all at once.

“Where the fuck did you hear that?” That was Xylo. He sounded just as panicked as Isaias did.

“Found it while researching some shit. Nala mentioned something too.”

“I wouldn’t be surprised,” Zahria started, her voice much softer than before. She sounded tired and worn out. She’d been working on this case for over a year and had kept coming up empty, fighting her superiors for information and access. She received neither one. Even now, she had been blocked again. I just wanted to know why. “After we found out that Michael had been released, I’ve been researching. The POCA is everywhere but they deal out their dirty work, Isaias. They want young, unmated Omegas. Anything other than that means nothing to them.”

“That doesn’t make any fucking sense.” Isaias gritted his teeth and took another sharp turn, throwing me against the car door. Pain shot through my arm but I didn’t fucking care. What was usually a fifteen to twenty-minute drive was feeling like forever. “Kieran’s not young and half the Omegas Michael attacked were mated.”

“I don’t know all the details, just bits and pieces I was able to catch when the guys from Mason were talking to him. Seems like Something about one last chance. To be honest, I think he’s gone rogue. Kieran was his for a long fucking time and he feels like you took that from him. Nala, well, she’s prime material. Granted, POCA doesn’t search for Omegas who fit the bill. The agents do.”

Which meant that Michael had been trying to bring back an Omega to fulfill his quota.

“You’d be surprised how much shit he spouts when he thinks no one is listening,” Xylo said. The sound of his engine picking up told me that they were speeding this way. “We’ll be there in an hour, maybe two but that bastard has a whole fucking head start.”

The rumble from Isaias’ growl reverberated through the car and pure, unadulterated rage flowed through the bond. “I told you guys before that he’s not getting locked up again. If he comes into my house-”

Xylo cut me off, “Then make it count. We’ll figure out the rest.”

KIERAN

He’s on his way. Get in the back room. Lock the doors. ETA 15 mins.

I stared at the phone again, a nervous giggle falling from my lips. Michael had somehow found his motherfucking way out of a cell and was headedbackhere? Had he not learned the first few times that his fucking trap wouldn’t work?

We had been occupied by some board game a few seconds ago until I felt rage surging through the bond. And a whole bout of fear. Ren had quickly scooped up the babies and rushed to the nest, the only room without an accessible window that could be reached from the ground. Nala stood in the hallway, armed with a pan held over her head, eyes hastily running around the room despite how many times I had told her to either sit in the nursery or the nest.

“He’s coming here?” Her voice was timid, her entire body shaking.

“Yes, Nala. They told us we have to-”

“No. If you’re standing out here. Me too.” She tried to make herself bigger by puffing out her chest but the whole façade fell apart with the tears gathering at the corners of her eyes.
