“I have found the right bound. It happens to the best of us.”

I lean forward, my voice turning serious. “Also, you need to know that Rokena Brimstone tried to have the Queen of Tarvos assassinated. My female overheard the plans and recorded their meeting and then gave the evidence to our government. They thwarted her plot and are now looking for her and her son.”

“Ah, now I truly understand why she put a hit out on your bound. I cannot believe the stupidity. Assassinate the Queen, without the authority of my father, the Don?” He snorts. “They are over. I will take care of this. Thank you for bringing this situation to my attention.”

“Thorn? Are you busy?”

I look up at the sound of Mica’s sweet voice. She wears mating pajamas again and is twirling her human hair and I can scent her arousal from across the room.

She needs me again.

I grin down at the screen and hit disconnect.

Chapter 14

Mica

Three weeks later I look around the long table at Flagstone Fire Ranch and my heart warms at the sight of so many beings together, chatting, laughing and eating my food. I’ve grown very comfortable here on the ranch and consider it home. And I’ve been creating many dishes from home and enjoying the ranch hands obvious excitement and love for my cooking.

They line up in the evenings after dinner, at my back door, to receive plates of cookies to take back with them to the barracks. I make sure to bake this every day. It is amazing how I can create these original planet recipes out here because of the magic of the industrial food dispenser in town. It can create exotic food products like chocolate, sugar, eggs and butter that are only found on the original planet. And I can bake with them. I’ve even managed to purchase something even I eat rarely—pasta and something called spaghetti sauce. It’s wonderful. The Hyrrokin love my treats because they are of a type they’ve never tried before, literally coming from a planet on the edge of the known universe.

The weather is beautiful today, as usual, and we are all eating outside. All I can hear is the laughter of the Hyrrokin, the odd flash of flame as they light up or blow out the top of their fire ale,and in the distance the whinny of the riding beasts in the barn. It’s a lovely setting.

Thorn sits next to me at the long table, in intense conversation with Burl and Newl and I’m simply eating some lasagna. This is going to be fun for me, going forward, learning how to create new dishes of human food using Hyrrokin meat and spices so they enjoy it more too. I’ll have to learn how to cook traditional Hyrrokin dishes also. It would be wrong of me not to.

For most of my teens and early twenties I was intent on moving away from where I grew up, thinking it was small and the universe was so big and needed exploring. And yet here I am, in a setting similar to where I grew up. I’ve come to the realization that what I was running away from, is what I ran towards. And I’m happy here. Well, as happy as a person can be, knowing that at any minute someone could show up, trying to kill me or take me away.

Rokena and Avid are still on the loose, which causes my stomach to flutter with nerves every single day. I can hardly wait for the news that they are behind bars and the hit is called off. It’s so hard for me. Maybe they aren’t still looking for me and I’m overinflating my significance to them? Or, maybe I’m right and they really want me dead.

Sheriff Loadstone considers where I’m at the perfect form of witness protection and I’m being left here. This could all be over soon because the authorities have gotten the go ahead from a Fire Judge to swoop down and arrest Rokena. I hope it all goes as planned and she doesn’t escape. Rokena behind bars is when I can finally rest, knowing I’ll be safe and it’s all over.

Hopefully.

It’s hard not knowing.

So, I do my best to carry on and live my life. I’ve moved in with Thorn and I’m all in on everything Flagstone Fire Ranch.I work in the office each day, organizing his business. I have two jobs here, both of which keep me busy and happy. And each morning and evening I either attack Thorn for more sex and mind blowing orgasms, or he’s already on top of me sliding in slow. It’s a lovely situation. I had no idea sex could be so addictive.

And also, I’m late for my period, which means I suspect that I’m pregnant already. Which means that Thorn wasn’t kidding when he said I’d get pregnant right away. I haven’t told him yet because I’m not certain and also I’m waiting for the right moment.

Today is Newl’s day off and he’s taking a day of rest in his cabin. I decided to invite the men over to the big house to have lunch on the front meadow, between the house and the barn. It’s a nice, central location with easy access for all of us on the property. The men set up the long table and the plates and utensils. They even helped me bring over and set up the buffet and the drinks. Between the help of the staff and my army of cleaning bots, this production really wasn’t all that hard to pull off. I could see myself doing this on a weekly basis.

And then the blaster shots start. One zooms past my head and I soon realize by the burn hole on the ground that it missed me by a tiny nanco. I try my best to stay alert and not faint.

“Take cover,” Thorn bellows.

Suddenly I’m pulled aside and the men work together to swiftly knock the table over, dumping all the plates and food in a crash to the ground. Then we are all behind this temporary shelter. In moments they are crouched around me and all the ranch hands hold a weapon. That’s when I learn the table isn’t a simple wooden table. It’s been reinforced with some sort of metal.

I had no idea they were all so heavily armed.

“It’s a sniper.”

“He’s on the top of the ridge.”

“Burl, you flank him to the right,” Thorn orders. “Percut, you go on the ground behind him. I’m going straight up the ridge.”

“Got it.”

“What am I doing?” I question.
