Page 36 of His Human Runaway

“You stay here and remain safe with our offspring.”

The men race into the jungle. I stay behind the back of the table with the other ranch hands. They are returning fire, but their shots cannot reach the ridge. The sniper has a special weapon that they cannot contend with, I appreciate that they are trying to protect us, but this is useless.

“Ugh.” Something needs to be done. I cannot expect that Thorn and the two others can take out that sniper by themselves either, nor can this team on the ground offer enough protection. I need for all of us to get out of this alive. We have no idea if it’s just the one sniper out there, or a whole group of criminals working together and planning to split up the take later. Rokena and Avid themselves could be out there.

I take my tablet out of my pocket and alert the authorities. Thorn and the others think they can handle this entirely by themselves, but I know we need Sheriff Loadstone and his back up team. They are ready for exactly this type of situation and can be here swiftly. We need reinforcements.

I just finish sending my emergency alert when a huge military hovercraft lands on the meadow between us and the jungle. The rear end opens and out runs Sheriff Loadstone and a whole team of Hyrrokin ready for battle.

“Holy crap,” I whisper.

There was no way they are here from my alert. They had to have already been on their way.

The military-looking Hyrrokin swarm into the jungle, in the same direction where Thorn, Burl and Percut went earlier. And the Sheriff and a few other males race towards me and the malesbehind the table. They fire their blasters towards the sniper as they run and manage to arrive unhurt.

“Are you alright?” the Sheriff growls.

“Yes, I’m fine. How did you know already?”

He points a claw at the other male beside him. “This is Prince Brimstone. He alerted us.”

“Brimstone,” I gasp. “Is he…?”

“I am indeed a Brimstone but my father, the Don wanted me to be here for this extraction. That is Avid himself up there on the ridge, playing the fool. He wants you for himself, no matter what it takes. During my interrogation he said something about giving you a personal token of his mating and that he expected you to be his bound?”

I roll my eyes. “I told him I would never be his mate again and again and again. I used that bracelet as a bribe to get out of that mansion.”

The mafia guy chuckles. “Well, I’m not saying anything he says is logical or legal, but that’s what is in his crazy mind. This is why he’s still pursuing you when it’s useless.”

“That’s why you’re here?”

“I’m here to make sure the military and Molten Lava know that we had nothing to do with this. We would never assassinate the Queen and we do not want blow back from this rogue mafia operation. Nor would I ever condone a human being targeted for a hit. My own bound is human and my offspring are half human. My mother-in-law is also human.”

“Really?”

“Can we all stop chatting and finish this operation?” the Sheriff snarls, from his position trying to shoot back. “That sniper is not yet down. There’s got to be more than one of them up there.”

Prince Brimstone glances down at his tablet which must be giving him some sort of intel the peacekeeper does not have. “It’s about to go down…now.”

The three mafia guys look at each other and exchange grim nods. “It’s over?” one questions. “Over,” the other agrees.

And right then a luxury hovercraft lands on the meadow right beside us, next to the military one.

“Tell Thorn I apologize for the inconvenience,” Prince shouts over the wind. “My family no longer owns that mansion on the edge of his property anymore and in fact we’re razing it to the ground and giving that acreage to the government for permanent land management. This area is now off limits amongst the mafia families. And congratulations female on the start of your family.”

The two other enforcers nod and smile at me too and then the three of them swiftly walk over to the hovercraft and they are gone.

“Did that just really happen?” I question.

“Yes,” the Sheriff laughs. “It did.”

“Wait. Does everyone know that I’m pregnant? How is that possible?”

“We do know,” the Sheriff agrees. “We can scent your additional scent trail.”

“Oh.”

Shortly afterwards a group of Hyrrokin emerge from the jungle, heading right for us.
