Page 39 of His Human Runaway

Life is good.

Lately, only one part is missing.

A bound. And offspring.

I am the same age as Rake Flagstone and he also has not found his bound. None of this mattered much to me. I’ve had many pleasure mates over the years who I’d met growing up. We would try each other out to see if we were compatible long term, and when we weren’t there were no hard feelings. As a matter of fact, all the females I pleasure mated with have since moved on to find their own true mates and many have offspring now.

The fact that I hadn’t found my own bound was not bothersome. I was busy. For the longest time I didn’t have a life conducive to family. I was working hard to create a solid life for myself, having lost my own family. I lived in barracks and had nothing but my weekly pay. But now I have moved on to being ranch manager myself for Flagstone Ranch Tria, owned by Thorn Flagstone. The middle brother is my best friend. The other two brothers are my friends too, but for whatever reason I feel most comfortable living and working with Thorn and since I was given the option to choose, I chose Thorn.

And now my boss, my friend, has his own bound and has started his line. I never thought Thorn would be the first of us to settle down. I always assumed it would be Sten, the youngest, considering he’s the most outgoing and has taken on the Prime Flagstone Ranch—the original. He doesn’t have to build a domicile, all the infrastructure is there.

Thorn met a human named Mica and his life changed. He built his domicile and immediately met his mate. I’d assumed he would live in that echoing domicile alone, maybe regretting hemade it so big, but he proved me wrong. That male is already filling it up.

He’s now inspired me.

I need my own place. I have a cabin next to the med lab and the barracks. This has been a good location but if I’m going to entice a female to settle out here with me, I’ll need to build something ready for that family, similar to Thorn’s plan.

And now I’ve been given a parcel of land far enough from the ranch to feel private, but close enough that I can easily arrive for work. It’s next to a lake, but again on the secluded side. Also, it’s close to the main road to town. To be truthful it’s a location I’ve scouted often while herding the pyrotaurs. It’s where I’ve always wanted to build a future home and when I approached Thorn about my plan to acquire that parcel, he agreed it was perfect. He sold it to me for a nominal sum, so it’s mine. And now I’m in using Rake Flagstone as help build a large cabin on the property.

“Do you have a female in mind for your new domicile?” he questions as we work together on the roof.

“No, none. Do you?”

He chuckles. “None.”

“It’s good to be ready,” I shrug. “If I’m prepared then when the opportunity arises I can take it in my claws and grab tight.”

“Agreed,” he responds.

“I think I might join one of those networks for singles, where beings find mates.”

He rears back. “Really?”

“Thorn has mated a human. I’ve met all the Hyrrokin females in the county and none are my mate. I’m going to have to find a female who is either from another county or town on the planet and try to get her to move out here with me. Or, I can even move wider and accept the idea of my future mate possibly being another species.”

“Heh. It’s true that Mica is compatible for Thorn because she grew up similar to us on a farming community. She’s here on the other side of the four sectors, but not all that different from us and chooses to live here.” Rake pauses to wipe sweat off his brow. “You’ve created a profile?”

“I have.”

“Seen anyone interesting?”

“Yes. A human.”

Rake laughs. “Aren’t there Hyrrokin on that singles network?”

“There are and I at first was clicking on those and was about to chat with several females who looked compatible, but then strangely a human female popped up recently in my feed. I hadn’t even expressed mates beyond Tarvos yet, but had the intention too. But this female is there.”

“And she intrigues you?”

“Yes. There is something about her.”

“From what I gathered from Thorn this is how it starts,” Rake comments. “Although I have had many pleasure mates in the past, I almost thought Tia was the one. But in the end I didn’t want to ask her to the courthouse, and that wasn’t what she wanted either. And now she has a bound. This makes me question my own future ability at knowing who would be my bound if I’ve had this near miss. Tia and I did run into each other in town and she told me that when she met him, she just knew. It was instant. There was something different about him, intriguing.”

I gaze in amazement at Rake because this might be the most he has spoken to me in the last couple of years. The most I’ve heard him speak to anyone in years. I had no idea he’d been thinking this deep about what made a bound ‘the one.’ But I haven’t told anyone either that I created that profile.

“This female is indeed different to me because she is in need of a bound in order to inherit a business. Her grandfather stipulated she must be mated in order to inherit. She shows a picture of herself and she’s…”

Rake grins. “Pleasing to the eye?”
