“Yes. And I like that she’s not a young girl. She looks youthful but also old enough to know what she’s doing. And she’s obviously hard working. But I sense that she sent that message to me in error. I think it went on blast to the four sectors.”

“She could be in need of help? Similar to Mica?”

“Yes.”

“What would you do?”

“Well, she’s requesting to be married in absentia…”

Rake lets out a puff of startled white smoke. “You would be willing to be legally bound to some female you’ve never met and permanently move to New Earth in order to make sure she is not being taken advantage of because of her mistake?”

“No, I would go there and convince her to leave what she’s doing and return here, with me,” I grin.

“Good luck with that. Do you think she’ll actually move across the four sectors to live with you?”

“I get the sense that her living situation isn’t optimal. I think there might be room to convince her of something else.”

He gives me a sharp glance. “Are you really going to try this out?”

“Well, I am on vacation at the moment,” I point out. “Now would be the time.”

“True. And we’re almost done with this cabin. The roof was all that needed finishing. I can do the rest of the detail work for you while you’re gone.”

“I would appreciate that.”

We both continue to work quietly.

“You’ve always been decisive,” Rake comments.

I put down my hammer. “True. Wish me luck. I’m getting on a transporter this afternoon to meet with her. This could be the best decision I’ve ever made, or the worst. We’ll find out.”

Get the Burl’s story! Her Alien Husband!

I’m in a predicament of historic proportions. I’ve learned I can’t inherit my great-grandfather’s highly profitable business unless I’mmarried? Yes, an entirely ridiculous rule.

I live in the middle of nowhere with a herd of rescue cats and nary a boyfriend in sight. I’m also considered plain, sharp-tongued and overweight. And I’ve never, once been interested in marriage. Hence my reason for applying for a mail-order husband.

One week later I open my front door and scream with fright when I find a huge, satanic-looking alien on my doorstep.

Even my cats dart away in fear.

Apparently, I screwed up the application and my invite went on blast to the entire four sectors. Now I’m legally married in absentia to a flame-throwing Hyrrokin male fifteen years my senior. He growls when I mention divorce. Ugh. He needs to go.

But then…he gently coaxes a sick, feral cat into his massive arms and gives it medicine. My heart instantly melts and my body heats up like never before.

Well, maybe I can give this a try.

Her Alien Stepbrother

Read on for more on Prince Brimstone and his search for Olivia…

My father, the Don of the Hyrrokin mafia, ordered me to escort my young stepsister from the Omega 9 space station back to her new home on Tarvos.

At first it seemed an easy enough task, and a natural way to ensure my new sibling was on my side, prior to her introduction to the rest of our thieving, bloodthirsty clan. But the assignment turned into an unmitigated fiasco.

I was unable to find this mysterious child I was sent to retrieve. And the time spent searching for her on the station was a complete waste of mental and physical energy. Never again do I want to navigate those chaotic, warren-like housing levels that exist only on Omega 9. Roughing up a variety of beings led to zero leads. It was a house of horrors. Late last night I returned home via transporter disk, empty-clawed and exhausted, and promptly fell into a deep slumber.

This morning I remain highly irritated and not entirely sure why.
