“No, that’s not it at all.” I shrugged. I blinked a few times and inhaled deeply, allowing the scent of those summer flowers to fill my lungs. When I focused back on her, Lucía was studying me curiously.

“Shit, are you okay?” she asked, concern lacing her voice. She took a step back, and her eyes roamed my body from head to toe, looking for something, anything wrong. I barked a laugh.

“No,linda, I’m fine.” She visibly relaxed, her features going back to that joy she carried with her recently, like she was on top of the world. I took a moment to collect myself, the small package now hidden inside my pants pocket. “I’mmore than okay,” I said, a mischievous grin playing on my lips. “But I do have something for you.”

She giggled. My favorite sound. And the way she was looking at me made my chest tighten. Her eyes were bright and pinched at the corners, the blue darker than normal.

“You said three years.”

She nodded, and a smile stretched across her face. I pulled the tongue depressor from my pocket and laughed.

“I forgot to give you this,” I said.

“¡Qué tarado!”she huffed and then rolled her eyes at me once more, tugging me against her body and kissing me deeply, intently. Like we’d done three years before that in that same spot. My hands found hers, and I pulled her towards the house. Her family was waiting for us inside, ready to celebrate her accomplishments.

“Wait,” she whispered, her voice barely audible over the sounds of the birds and the wind. “Iforgot to give you something.”

A chuckle rumbled from the base of my chest and vibrated with amusement. She reached into her bag, rummaging for a moment before taking out a small square of paper, a little wrinkled in the center and one of the edges curled up towards the middle.

I blinked, waiting for her words. One side of her mouth tipped up, a sly smile barely there.

“I’m pregnant.”

I let go of her hands and took a step back, watching herlike my life depended on her. And if those words she just uttered were true, then it just might.

“¿Qué?”I heard her just fine. “How?” Nope, that wasn’t the right question.

She laughed, a hearty laugh that was soft and wonderful and everything I ever wanted. Full of hope and excitement. Full of joy.

“When did you find out?” She was still holding out the ultrasound in my direction, but my hands were shaking so much, I couldn’t even attempt moving them from their spot.

“Just this morning.” Her eyes were shining with unshed tears, the smile on her face so big I could barely discern their blue color.

“Oh my god.” I was crying. Tears streamed down my face. I kneeled in front of her and grabbed her by the waist, dragging her body to me and resting my forehead on her stomach. Mine.Mine, mine, mine. Finally mine.

Forever.
