I turned away from my brothers, sucking in a desperate breath as my vision blurred and swam.

If they did that… I’d burn the entire city down.

How could I have become so bound to someone? That I’d give it all up for her in a heartbeat?

Was I as crazy as some thought? A devil hiding amongst saints? I knew I was different, but the thought of losing Vee… there would never be another like her.

I wanted her and only her. From the moment I’d held her in my arms from the road, the broken little angel who refused to die, she’d stolen my heart.

“Kieran, we need to keep it together.” Zane’s hand rested on my shoulder, my dancing vision stilling as I forced myself to breathe.

“We’re getting her back, safe,” Enzo added as he touched my other shoulder.

We never made promises we couldn’t keep.

VERONICA

Isat still, my hands tied to the chair they’d sat me on, the blindfold keeping me in darkness.

Zane’s shout of my name rattled around my mind, the gunfire following making me feel sick. Was he hurt or worse? I kept hearing it all over again in my mind, and it felt like something was lodged in my throat, fear and distress claiming me in her ever-crushing grip.

The men had blindfolded me while I was still in the trunk before dragging me in here and binding me to the uncomfortable chair.

I knew someone was in the room with me still, I could feel their presence, but they’d gagged me as well.

What did they intend to do with me? No one had said a word apart from the orders to tie me up and gag me, and I so desperately wanted to know their intentions, and if Zane was okay.

“Veronica, huh?” I stiffened at the footsteps drawing near, recoiling as fingers grazed over my cheek, sending a shock straight through me.

“That was Zane Slade who fired at us,” someone else in the room said.

“Fascinating that he put himself in such a dire position for one woman.”

I winced as the blindfold was yanked off my head, the sudden brightness blinding me as I squinted and blinked.

“Why would he do such a thing for you?” The man before me was striking, but his murky green eyes were cruel, as sharp as his jawline but as twisted as those brown curls on his head.

He undid my material gag, pulling it away roughly as he bent over closer, his face only inches from mine.

His words rolled around in my mind. The way the other guy spoke, it sounded like Zane was okay. They weren’t chuffed or boasting about killing him, nor saying he’d been hit. I’d take some solace in that, but the relief was short-lived.

“Who are you to them?”

“I’m a maid,” I forced the weak lie out, my voice soft and pathetic. I hated how my body was trembling, and the need to pee had made itself known. I wouldn’t dream of asking to relieve myself.

I didn’t even see it coming.

The pain seared through my cheek as my head snapped to the side, stunning me.

“Don’t lie, bitch,” the man snarled, his hand still raised like he was ready to strike me again.

This really was Callum somehow hurting me once more, punishing me for what I’d done. These hands were doing his dirty work.

“Kieran was sighted at the markets with a woman matching your description, I’m sure if they showed me photos, it’d be you,”he stated, his hand moving to cup my cheek as he sneered at me. His thumb caught my chin, forcing me to look at him fully. “So, let’s not do this silly little dance. Who are you to them?”

“I don’t know, they picked me up off the side of the road and decided to be nice to me,” I spat, knowing it was pointless to lie. They already had their suspicions, and it was pretty much the truth. If I told them how important I was to them, things could get even worse. What was the likelihood they’d set me free if I cooperated? I doubted they followed the same code as the guys, not if he was slapping me.
