Enzo frowned as we both exchanged looks, wondering what his excuse would be. It would be something business related and pressing, as per usual. We all knew the double call technique, so he wouldn’t be too concerned.

“Right, understandable. Hope that deal is going well,” Zane said. Yet another family deal. Our family had already staked its claim over Weststone city, ruling it from the shadows, clashing heavily with the few other crime families.

“We have an urgent matter,” Zane stated before he put the phone onto speaker for us all to be privy to the conversation.

“Speak,” our father said gruffly.

“The Moretti have made a move on us. They found the lodge,” Zane shared.

“I knew it was too much to think they wouldn’t make another move. We’ve been trying to settle things after the latest bloodbath. These turf wars are getting too messy, too many civilians at risk,” our father said with a heavy sigh, and I heard the telltale clink of his whiskey glass.

I could see him already, perched in his leather executive chair behind that expensive cognac desk that had been passed down through generations, nursing his whiskey as he contemplated the plans for our family and how to continue growing its wealth.

“Did you handle them?” he asked, his tone dismissive, and I narrowed my eyes.

“They took something from us,” Zane stated.

“Well, get it back, show them what happens when they mess with us,” he said with a sniff.

“It was someone,” I growled.

“Someone?” This had my father’s tone shifting, much more interested now, like we’d waved a red flag in front of a tired old bull. He was just contemplating if it was worth charging.

“Veronica,” Enzo spoke up, her name rolling off his tongue and making my stomach knot.

“The woman?” I could hear the disbelief in his voice, picture him arching a wretched brow at us for getting her mixed up in all of this. “I told you to be careful, the Moretti don’t have the same codes as us anymore it seems.”

“Dad, she wears the ring, the promise ring,” Zane said sharply, and the line went silent.

We flicked our gazes at one another, knowing the weight that that statement would have.

“Then we best get her back, we don’t make promises we can’t keep.”

That ring was a symbol, it wasn’t something Zane would give away so carelessly, and our father knew that.

“We’re flying into the city, we’ve set up blockades, but we need the entire family backing us,” Zane stated.

“Good, you’ve taken good measures. I will meet you when you arrive, until then, I’ll see what details I can dig up. At this rate, our best bet is to wait to hear their demands. I will set up a meeting with Stefano.”

The phone clicked off, and I cracked my knuckles.

“We should burn their main compound to the damn ground,” I spat.

“We do that, then this doesn’t stop, the other families could see us as too unhinged, too big of a threat and want to wipe us off the board,” Zane said, attempting to be the voice of reason.

“They can sure as fuck try,” I scoffed.

“Besides, we don’t know where they have her. She could be in there,” Zane added.

“We need to be smart, Kieran. Vee needs us, God knows what they intend to do with her,” Enzo said quietly, his face drawn.

“If they know what’s good for them, they won’t touch her,” I growled out, my fingers twitching with the need to break bone or draw blood.

“They already made the move to take her, we have to be mindful that they might do anything.” Zane’s eyes only darkened with that, and the pit in my stomach turned into an abyss.

How far would they go? Would they mail us her head?

The mere thought had me breathless, my chest tight and my throat constricted.
