I didn’t want to be alone with my thoughts, not now, and he was a damn saint for that.

ZANE

Iwandered through the darkness, following the soft voice beckoning me through the shadows. The whisper was so serene and magical, and a soft light appeared further ahead, guiding me alongside the voice.

Before I knew it, the light flashed, rushing towards me and encasing me for a moment before it melted away, revealing a bedroom.

I stared around, at the floor length window overlooking the ocean, the sheer curtains blowing in a soft breeze. The room was open, a natural wood theme to it, and my gaze shifted to the four poster bed.

“Vee,” I breathed, relief and delight filling me as she lay sprawled out on her stomach, kicking her legs gently behind her.

“I’ve been waiting for you,” she said with a giggle, her eyes twinkling with happiness.

I crossed the room in three strides, falling onto the bed beside her as she rolled onto her side.

“I missed you,” she said as her soft hand cupped my face, a few strands of her rich brown hair brushing her cheeks.

I held her hand to my face, loving how her smile widened as she gazed into my eyes.

A laugh broke free from her as she rolled onto her back, tugging a sheet down from somewhere overhead.

I chuckled as she laughed, fluttering the sheet over us.

I watched as her face disappeared and reappeared, her laughter contagious at the obscenely childish act that we were finding joy in.

I reached out for her as the sheet fluttered down once more, wanting to pull her close and hold her tight.

Her hand shot out from under the sheet, smearing red across the white expanse.

The sheet fluttered up once more, revealing her bloody, broken face as she gasped for air, choking on her own blood.

“Vee!”

I fought to get the sheet off us, pulling her chilled body into my arms, her blood painting me alongside her.

“Why didn’t you save me?” she gasped, gurgling on the blood spilling from those sweet lips.

The sheet was twisting around us now, crushing her broken form against me, the air being torn from my lungs.

“I’m here, Vee, it’s going to be okay,” I ground out as I pulled against the constricting material.

Her head flopped to the side, her eyes glossing over as her lips took on a blue shade.

Her skin was far too white, her blood far too red splashed all over it.

“No, it’s not,” she breathed, her chest falling still.

“No,” I choked out, the unseen hand closing around my heart, ready to crush it.

Not Vee.

I jolted awake, blinking as I quickly got a bearing on my surroundings.

I was in the passenger seat of the BMW, Kieran sprawled out in the back seat.

“Bad dream?” Enzo asked as he closed the driver’s door after climbing back in, a tray of coffees in hand.
