A gunshot rang out, and Enzo cursed and rolled off Vincent to dive behind the bed. Had he been hit? He’d winced, but I hadn’t seen anything proper. Maybe he was just grazed?

I sucked in a breath, freezing up as someone stepped over me. I stared up at them, not recognizing the strange man pointing a gun towards the bed as he tried to move in on Enzo.

Did he think I was dead because I was facing away from him? Because I’d froze up at the sight of Enzo trying to cave in Vincent’s skull?

No matter, he was going to shoot Enzo, and I couldn’t let that happen.

I flicked my gaze to my gun case, adrenaline resurfacing as I lurched for it, ignoring the way my body struggled, still attempting to recover from my close call.

I pulled the pistol out just as Enzo cursed the man out, promising him death from the Slades.

I didn’t hesitate as I rolled onto my side, aiming my pistol and taking the safety off.

I pulled the trigger without hesitation, not wanting to waste one second.

The man collapsed onto one knee, the shot to his back causing him to whip around, his gun lurching in my direction.

I was ready to pull the trigger again, but there was no need as Zane knocked him to the floor.

“Don’t you fucking dream of it!” he snarled as he knocked the gun away.

I just watched in shock as Zane punched him hard once before gouging his thumbs into the man’s eyes. The man screamed bloody murder as Zane did this, but his expressionwas hardened as the man’s eyes caved and blood mixed with fluids oozed all down his face.

Enzo was now climbing to his feet, while I let my hand with the pistol fall down in front of me as I lay on the floor.

The man beneath Zane had fallen still now, Zane’s thumbs buried into his skull.

“Fuck, that’s one way to go out.”

I stiffened, holding my breath at the familiar voice behind me in the doorway. The man who’d slapped me when I’d been kidnapped. It took me only a fraction of a second to place him.

“Well, two Slades, unarmed. I should take this as a gift.”

“Mario,” Enzo spat.

I dared not move, my hand still clenched around my pistol.

Zane leaned back on the man he’d just brutally killed, drawing in a deep breath. He had no weapon, no way to defend himself. Neither of them did, and I knew without seeing that Mario had a gun aimed at them.

Zane’s eyes met mine, acceptance in them as he just stared at me.

He was ready to die for me. Too bad I couldn’t see Enzo. I wasn’t ready for any of this, and my heart hammered wildly in my chest.

I had to do something, I was the only one with a weapon.

“And this is where the Slade legacy ends, along with the Carbone.”

“Go fuck yourself,” Enzo snapped.

It was now or never. I sucked in a breath, Zane’s jaw clenching, his eyes pained. He knew what I was going to do.

It was our only shot.

ZANE

The distress call from Hank had been all the heads up we’d gotten before they’d blown the penthouse doors and stormed in. I wasn’t sure how they did it, but I had a feeling we’d lost a lot of our security detail.
