Kieran and I had dove for the weapons stashed all around the penthouse, and Kieran ordered Thomas upstairs after handing him a gun.

Veronica needed to be protected, and it was clear he was not cut out to be killing those he deemed as family still.

I’d shut everything off, focusing on taking out as many of them as I could as they set off a smoke bomb.

We may have been outnumbered, but this was our place, and our security team was moving in as well from downstairs.

I’d picked off those who’d headed down the hall after Thomas, intent on killing him as well, and then Enzo was flying out of Veronica’s room, taking cover as he fired off carefully aimed rounds.

I’d ducked behind the cover of the kitchen island, cursing as another slipped down the hall.

Kieran had been grazed across his upper arm, but he was unfazed as he continued cutting them down, switching weapons from the hidden spots in our kitchen. We were prepared for attacks like this, it was a part of this life.

“Cover me,” I hissed as I shot forth, lurching around the corner into the hall only seconds after the guy standing in the doorway to Veronica’s fired a shot. He was still aiming, and I took my chance, landing a headshot before I took cover into the closest room.

I dove behind a bed as two men followed me in, and I fired once blindly over the edge of the bed before jumping up recklessly.

I landed the shot only seconds before the remaining man could pull his trigger.

How many had slipped down the hall in these split seconds? Was Veronica safe in the hide? Was Thomas alive?

Fuck.

I lurched for the doorway once more, watching as Enzo barreled past, butt-ass naked.

I’d not reached the doorway before I heard the bestial roar, something I’d never heard from him before.

Too bad I couldn’t follow as bullets rained down the hallway, and I took cover inside the room, seizing my chances to return fire.

I could only pray Kieran was holding his own out in the kitchen.

The gunfire was dying off, but one shot rang out from Veronica’s room, my chest tightening. I tore out of the room, sprinting down the hall, no longer caring if bullets tore me apart.

I winced as one hit me in the shoulder blade, another grazing my thigh, but I didn’t take cover until I was at her doorway.

Please, Veronica, be alive. We need you. I need you.

I spied Veronica on the floor, my gut wrenching, but my focus moved to the man aiming a gun behind the bed.

Enzo.

I tried to fire off a shot, but the barrel clicked, just as I saw Veronica move out of my peripheral.

I was all out of ammo.

But Veronica didn’t waste even a moment as Enzo swore at his attacker.

She yanked the pistol from its case, rolling onto her side as she fired off a shot immediately.

I took my chance, not knowing if she had it in her to pull the trigger again as the man collapsed to one knee.

He then dared to turn his weapon on her.

Red washed my vision as I snarled at him. “Don’t you fucking dream of it!”

I slammed him to the ground, landing one heavy blow to his face after knocking his gun away.

He’d never look upon the woman I loved ever again. The mere thought he’d had of trying to hurt her was where his life ended.
