I blinked, finally focusing on him as he touched my cheek and took the gun from me.

Bloody droplets were all over his face from the other guy, and his hands were coated in sprays of blood. But I didn’t care about that, just the fact that he was there, smiling softly at me, relief etched across his face.

And something else. Gratitude and… pride?

“Thomas,” I said, my voice mangled and pain shooting through my throat as I looked at Thomas.

“I’ll check on him, are you okay?” Enzo spoke up as he moved away from the bed.

I nodded as Zane checked me over and touched my swollen and clearly bruised throat. I stared after Enzo, relief sweeping through me when Thomas groaned as he applied pressure to his wound.

He was still alive.

The gunfire had died down out in the hall, and the penthouse was now eerily quiet.

Footsteps sounded outside, and Enzo snapped his head to the door, the pistol raised at the ready.

“Veronica!” Kieran shot through the doorway, covered in blood and gun at the ready.

“I’m fine,” I croaked out as he rushed to me and kneeled down.

“What the fuck happened? Thomas was supposed to protect you,” Kieran spat, but his gaze moved to where Enzo was assisting Thomas, and his face softened.

“You were supposed to hide, Vee,” Zane said as he gently touched my cheek, wiping the tears from my face.

I wanted to speak, but the pain was too much, my throat feeling closed over and crushed.

“Vincent,” Thomas wheezed out, one hand flopping to point at Vincent on the floor, who was gasping for air, unable to move with his face beaten into a bloody pulp.

Kieran’s expression shifted, and I watched him as he rose off the floor, Zane remaining by my side and holding me close.

“This is the fucker who hurt you, Vee?” Kieran asked as he stood over Vincent, glancing back at me for confirmation.

I stared at Kieran, at the murderous look in his eyes, his face twisted in a way that made my blood run cold.

And yet, I still nodded.

“I had plans for you, Vincent. Big plans when I found you, things I wanted to try,” Kieran stated as he cocked his head at the wretched man who’d hurt me. “But, it seems someone here has given you a bit of a makeover. And I think Veronica deserves to see you die after what you did to her.”

“Kieran,” Enzo spoke up from where he was now pressing a rag to Thomas’ wound. A shirt by the looks of it, although I wasn’t sure where he’d grabbed it from. I’d been too focused on Kieran.

I nodded as Zane gently stroked my hair out of my face.

I wanted to see the monster pay for what he’d done, so I knew he was truly gone.

Kieran raised his handgun, pointing it at Vincent before he grinned, that wicked look making my stomach knot.

Kieran aimed the gun at the floor to ceiling window, firing into the glass several times until it finally shattered and fell away. Each shot made me flinch, but Zane just whispered comforting words to me.

“It’s okay, Veronica, you’re going to be okay.”

I watched silently as Kieran heaved Vincent up, holding him by the throat as he held him before the now open window.

I sure hoped there was no one down below that the glass had fallen on.

“Look at her, that woman right there is everything to me, to us. And you hurt her. I’d rather have split your ribs open and seen how long you’d live, perform a true punishment on you, butthis will have to do,” Kieran said as he stepped to the side so that Vincent could look at me.

Now that he was upright and feebly grasping at Kieran’s arm, I could see the damage Enzo had caused. Blood was pouring from his mouth, and his left eye was an oozy mess, closed up while his temple was split and his left cheek swollen. He barely resembled the man who’d attacked me now, save for all those tattoos.
