"It's not fair to you, either," I say, hoping I'm injecting enough kindness into my voice to make him understand.

"I realise that." He blows out a heavy breath. "I have trust issues that are causing me to doubt you. When you rocked up here last night and announced you wanted to stay, I heard thewords, but I… I didn't fully believe them. And for that I'm sorry, and I should own that and be sorry for that. You're not responsible for what happened in my past, and it's unfair to hold you to that just because I got fucked over by an arsecunt. Wait, that's not right. Arsewipe. Sorry, it's been a long day."

I reach over and take his hand. "This okay?"

He smiles at me. "Very okay."

"I want you to know that I hear everything you're saying. In retrospect, surprising you the way I did probably wasn't the best idea. I guess I got scared, too. I felt like I was losing you. Like you said yesterday, texting and video calls are great, but they're nothing compared to the real thing."

He nods. "I agree."

"And I know that you need more than words from me. You need to see me backing up what I say. And I will. If you give me a chance, I promise you I'll show you."

He drops his head and pulls his hand away, like those last words physically stung him.

"What's wrong?" I ask.

"Imade you a promise, and I failed."

"You didn't fail." He looks over at me with sad eyes, and my heart clenches. "I know you said you'd figure this out, but look, you've given me the opportunity to step up."

"Huh?"

"Think about it. If you'd somehow magically solved all our problems, I wouldn't be here now, showing you how much I want to be here."

"So what you're saying is… I'm a next-level genius when it comes to navigating complex interpersonal relationships and have superior emotional intelligence…and I just didn't know it?"

I laugh. "I wouldn't go that far. But you didn't let me down, Wilby. I don't think that for a minute, so please get that outof your head. This whole situation is way bigger, way more powerful, than either one of us ever imagined."

He blows out another long breath. "You're right. I was just innocently strolling along the streets of Sydney, minding my own business—oomph."

"I'll give you innocently minding my own business."

I fly off my chair and jump on top of him, which sends his chair rocking wildly. He grabs onto my waist to stop me from falling off. I grind my ass down lower, because I will take any chance I can get to assert my bottom dominance.

"It was the best night of my life," he says, smiling, and presses his lips to mine.

"That sounds like a challenge," I murmur, keeping my lips close to his.

"Rumour has it you like challenges."

"Rumor has it I always win every challenge I face."

"Rumour has it …that my cock agrees with that assessment."

We both burst out laughing…and crying…and kiss each other with wet, sloppy, happy kisses before we race inside and lock the door to my room.

"Do I need to spray my chair down with disinfectant?"

I clutch my chest in mock shock. "Polly, what are you insinuating?"

"I peeked through the window yesterday. I saw what you two were doing on this very chair before you rushed down to your room, reemerging twenty minutes later with flushed cheeks and messy hair."

"Yikes. I thought you were out the back."

"I was. After seeing you both stampede through the house like a herd of elephants, I knew I had to leave for my own good."

She's smiling, and, god, I love her teasing and how easy it is just spending time with her. She sits down next to me. Wilby and the crew left crazy early this morning, and I have some work stuff I need to do that I'm totally delaying.
