The sound of buzzing grew louder and louder until I fainted.

Chapter

Nine

The beeping of a heart rate monitor was the first thing I noticed when I woke, but the pain in my stomach was the second thing.

I opened my eyes and groaned at the bright lights.

“Don’t move,” Riddick ordered me, one of his warm hands rested on my shoulder and pushed gently to keep me down.

“Wh-Where am I?”

“Hospital,” he answered. “You were bleeding a lot and none of us felt comfortable enough trying to deal with your wound.”

Wound? Oh, right the sword.

“Is the girl?—”

“She’s safe, too.”

A nurse came in and smiled at me. “It’s about time you woke up. Your friends have been very worried.”

“Friends?” I asked, frowning. The only one in the room was Riddick.

She chuckled. “Well, we couldn’t let them all in here or there would be no room for us to treat you.”

“Triston and Percival are in the waiting room. Branson and Kieran dealt with the trespassers and ensured the house wassecure, but did come to check on you once before going back to the house to feed the animals,” Riddick explained. “They should be back soon.”

“How’s your pain?” the nurse asked as she came and examined me.

“A seven,” I admitted.

She frowned. “Let me find a healer. You came at a bad time, a big car accident almost tapped out our healers, so they did what they could to save you, but couldn’t fully heal you. We should have someone who can finish healing you now.”

Once she left, I looked at Riddick. “Thank you, for bringing me here and staying.”

He set his hand atop mine and squeezed gently. “You do not need to thank me for doing something basic.”

“You didn’t need to stay,” I pointed out.

He opened his mouth, but his phone rang. “I’ll be right back.”

I smirked. “I’m not going anywhere.”

His frown turned into a smile and he nodded once to me before leaving the room.

For all my blustering and power, I’d allowed myself to get stabbed. How basic and stupid could I be?

Branson peeked his head in and I smiled wide. “Hey, Branny Boy.”

He hated the nickname, scowling after I said it, and walked in with Kieran on his heels.

“How are you two? I hope you didn’t get injured dealing with my trespassers.”

Branson stared down at me with a deep, deep frown. “You were stabbed in the stomach by a sword, Ember.”

I nodded. “I remember.”
