“Fine, let’s try luring them to Ember’s,” Riddick said, but I could tell by his deep frown that he didn’t like that idea.

Just as I was about to drop the walls, a small hole opened up beneath my feet and a gopher popped up, immediately biting my leg. “Ow,” I yelped.

The gopher released me and went back into the hole yelling apologies as he fled.

“Well, my blood definitely cures them still,” I muttered. Maybe there was another way to do this? Maybe I could cure them. They only needed a small taste, a drop of my blood. I had more than enough blood to give them all a drop.

The three men around me wouldn’t like it, so I had to do something I knew would piss them off and possibly ruin the small steps towards a relationship that I had built.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered. “Hopefully, you’ll forgive me soon.”

“What?” all three asked and turned towards me.

Taking one step back, I shifted the rocks, allowing me to squeeze out while keeping the men trapped in the rock.

“Em!” Triston yelled.

“Don’t do it!” Riddick yelled.

“Ember!” Percival yelled.

Outside of the safety of the stone, I was immediately attacked by the creatures. Grabbing my dagger, I cut my hand, let it leak down to my fingers, and ran up to the nearest creature, a wolf, and smeared the blood across their snout. The wolf licked its lips and the black ooze fell off of it.

It worked!

Taking a deep breath, I used my power to propel myself up atop the stone box the guys were in, once atop it, I looked aroundat all of the creatures, all climbing over each other in their attempt to get to us. This had to work, it was the only option.

“Here we go!” I shouted. Sending the stone blocks back into the ground, except the one under my feet, I released the power holding them and spread my gaze across all of the creatures. Raising my hands, I felt my power grip each and every one of them, including the guys below me. With a smile, I said, “Sit.”

Immediately, every single creature sat on their butts and were held in place by me.

I had to move fast, before my power waned. Hand dripping blood, I ran to each creature, smeared a bit of blood on their lips, or right on their tongue for the few that had been stopped with their mouth open. Moving out in an expanding circle, I felt my hold on them faltering and I had to open new cuts to keep the blood flowing.

The people of the city that had started fighting the creatures all stopped to stare at me as I darted between them.

At the last creature, I felt my magic drain hit me, fatigue so strong I stumbled, causing me to miss the creature. Now released from my hold, it bit into my arm, making me cry out.

The creature immediately released me as my blood cured it and the darkness oozed off of it to the ground.

Riddick ran to me, picked me up from the ground, and cradled me against his chest. “Ember, talk to me.”

“Shleepy,” I muttered, my head lolling to the side as a huge wave of exhaustion hit me.

“Get out of this city right now!” Mr. Mayongan yelled as he stomped over to us.

“Excuse me?” Riddick demanded, straightening.

I rolled my head over to look at the red-faced mage. “I just saved your city, you ungrateful twat.”

Impressively, his face turned an even darker shade of red. “You brought them here in the first place!”

“I was at my house, sir, and saw the news so I came here,” I said and rolled my eyes.

Riddik handed me to Percival who rubbed his nose against my cheek and inhaled deeply. “You stubborn woman. You scared us.”

Mr. Mayongan snapped, “You used your blood on them! Everyone saw it! The cameras recorded it! How can you possibly deny?—”

“You’ve got a rogue mage cursing creatures and shifters,” Riddick said, growled, and took a step closer to him, making him stumble back a step. “Perhaps you should be asking the Council what’s going on instead of blaming an innocent woman who risked her life just now.”
