I wanted to listen to more, to hear him tear Mr. Mayongan down more, but the fatigue pulled me under and I fell asleep in Percival’s arms.

My magic crash sleep last three days and when I woke, it was to the feeling of a mage on my property.

I leapt from bed, ran out of the house, and raised the twin boulders I kept at the roadside for defensive purposes. “Don’t move!” I yelled.

Riddick, a handsome male I’d only ever seen on TV before, and a third man who looked familiar, but I couldn’t place turned to look at me.

“Why did you bring a mage here?” I snarled and felt worried that perhaps Riddick was someone I couldn’t trust after all.

“Oh, she’s feisty, I like her,” the handsome male said with a wide smile and stepped across my ward. “I’m Prince Caleb, it’s nice to meet you, Ember. I’ve heard so much about you.”

“I’d bow, but I am a little busy at the moment,” I said and glared at the mage who continued to watch me with a calm curiosity. “State your business!”

“Did you make these wards?” he asked and stroked a finger down them. “They’re very impressive.”

I moved the boulders between us. “Five seconds, sir. State your business or you’ll find out what else impressive I can do.”

“You know the problem with using objects in a telekinesis battle?” he asked. “It ultimately turns into who is the stronger one to push or pull the object.”

He raised a hand and started to pull the boulders.

I pulled against him hard, ensuring he was focused on the boulders, then released them, dropped down and flung my hand out, making him fly through the air.

Prince Caleb threw his head back as he laughed and then continued to laugh so hard, he bent over and clutched his stomach.

The mage stood up with a wide smile. “I can see why you like her, Riddick.”

“Are you done teasing her now?” Riddick asked and walked over to me. “I’m sorry, they’re not usually like this. No, wait, that’s a lie. They are often like this.”

“You remind me of my mate,” the mage said and the wide smile softened as he mentioned her. Clearly, he loved her.

“Riddick, what is going on?” I demanded.

“I should have recorded that to send to Mother,” Prince Caleb said and wiped at his eyes. “Or to my fathers in our group chat. I can’t remember the last time I saw you get tossed like that, Dad.”

Dad? Oh. Oh no! I’d just tossed the King of Mages.

I bowed and said, “I’m very sorry! I didn’t know who you were, and you wouldn’t tell me and?—”

“It’s quite alright. I’ve heard about your recent mage troubles,” King Nico said as he finished dusting off his clothes and walked across the ward to me. “Please stand. Bowing is veryold school and not something I particularly want to continue in my reign.”

I straightened and he held out his hand. “It’s an honor to meet you,” I said as we shook.

He tilted his head to the side as we held hands. “You’re not just a mage, darlin’.” He raised my hand and sniffed against the back of it. “Caleb.”

Caleb walked over, took my hand, and his eyes immediately widened. He blinked a few times, then seemed to come back to himself, raised my hand up, and sniffed. His brows furrowed and he looked from Riddick to me. “May I sniff your neck?”

Riddick growled softly, which made Caleb smile and me frown. Why was he growling at his friend?

“May I ask what for?” It was a slightly strange request.

“Your smell is unique, but the magic scent isn’t as easily discernable from your hand. Your neck will allow me to truly scent you. I swear I won’t harm you, just smell.”

I wasn’t one hundred percent certain what he was talking about, but I nodded.

Caleb was tall, at least six foot three, and I could feel his power radiating off of him in waves. It wasn’t a bad feeling, though, more like being next to the ocean and knowing it was powerful and could kill you, but that it was also calming. He stepped right up in front of me, smiled as he bent down and said, “You have beautiful eyes.”

“Thank you,” I whispered, my heart hammering. The longer he was close to me, the more I felt an odd pull, or desire to move closer. What was the cause of it? Was it because he was so powerful?
