Triston and Percival fell to their hands and I screamed in my mind.

Kieran pushed Mr. Mayongan back, spread his arms, and stayed between us. “She’s possessed! It’s not her doing this.”

Branson was right. They were weak and cowardly.

Centering myself, focusing on my soul, my heart, my mind, I focused on the part that wasn’t me. The part that had infiltrated and was attacking me.

Using all of my mental energy, I attacked the mage who sought to hurt these men who were trying so hard to protect me.

As I attacked him, I felt a familiar magic attacking him … Riddick.

With a scream, my attacker’s presence disappeared, allowing me to take back control of my body.

I fell to my hands and knees, chest heaving from the strain.

Several staffs pressed against my back.

“You’re surrounded. Do not resist,” a deep male voice said.

Raising my eyes, I saw that Triston, Percival, Branson, and Kieran were all being held down as well.

“It’s not what you think,” I croaked, my voice sore like my screams had been physical. “Please, they’re innocent and?—”

“We’ll be the judge of that,” the male mage beside me snapped. “We’re taking you into custody. Do not resist or we will use lethal force.”

“No one is resisting,” I said and stayed perfectly still.

“That is enough!” Nico yelled, his voice booming like thunder and making the ground shake.

“King Nico!” the mage holding me gasped and the others whispered in surprise.

“Release them immediately,” he ordered.

“But, Your Highness, they attacked civilians and?—”

“Are you questioning your King?” Nico asked, his voice booming again.

“N-No, Your H-Highness.”

The mages released the guys, but the one next to me kept his staff on me. “With all due respect, you don’t know who this woman is or what she’s capable of. For years we’ve had to deal with her and?—”

“And her what?” Riddick asked. “Her treating the people you turned a blind eye to getting attacked? Her treating those you view as less just because of their parentage? Please, tell me how she’s the one who should be locked up and not you for allowing things to escalate this much?”

Caleb walked up to the man holding his staff on me and said, “Move your staff or we will take this an act of treason, and as the Prince of Mages, I will enact justice.”

“Prince of Mages? You’re a hybrid like this lot,” the mage scoffed. “You aren’t our prince, any more than this?—”

The man’s words were cut off as chains burst up out of the ground, curling around his body and neck with nothing more than a flick of Nico’s finger. “You dare say such heinous things in my presence? About my son! It seems you have forgotten your place. It seems you are in need of a lesson.” He turned towards the cameras and said, “Any who wish to challenge my son’s or my place may step forward. I will remind you why I am king. We do not discriminate against hybrids. They are part of us, even if they are not full-blooded. Your racism and bigotry have turned you into hateful fearmongers who attacked an innocent woman and ostracized her from your city for doing nothing but helping others. It ends now.” He slammed his staff against the ground and the mage in the chains disappeared.

“Are you alright?” Riddick asked as he squatted down beside me. Gently, he took my elbow and helped me sit up.

I nodded slowly. “I’m okay. How did you find us so quickly? How did you even know where to look?”

“We infiltrated the Council’s place and while we were investigating, I smelled you, your scent. I followed it to a room in the basement where the mage who’s been cursing the creatures and shifters was, where he was possessing you from. I killed him when I realized you had partly broken the hold he had on you, so I knew you wouldn’t be hurt by his death.”

I threw my arms around his neck and hugged him tightly, resting my cheek on his shoulder. “Thank you. I thought I sensed you.”

“Caleb teleported us here as soon as we realized what was happening,” Riddick whispered. “I would have come sooner if I could have. I’m so sorry you got possessed while I was gone.”
