“Your entire life you have been nothing, but a huge thorn in our side,” Mom said with a long-suffering sigh.

My eyes finally opened, but my arms wouldn’t move. In fact, each time I tried to move them, metal clinking only sounded. Turning, I realized that I was chained to a wall while my parents and a handful of people I didn’t know, stood before me. All of them were scowling which I found hilarious since I was the one wrongfully chained up.

“What is going on?” I asked and shook my groggy head. “What did you do to me?”

“We gave you a sedative because we knew you wouldn’t willingly come with us now that the prince has no doubt filled your mind with lies,” Mom said.

“Lies like you not being my biological parents?” I asked and watched Dad closely, knowing he couldn’t hide his reactions as well as she could.

As I predicted, he flinched.

“Why did you kidnap me?” I asked. “I cut ties with you, changed my last name, did everything that you asked. Why?”

“It’s your fault,” Dad snapped. “You had to go make a spectacle of yourself on live television.”

I gaped at him. “The mages are the ones who forced my hand! I was possessed.”

“I told you we should have sent her to a better school,” Mom said and scoffed.

They looked exactly like I remembered, plus a few extra wrinkles and grey streaks in their hair. When I had been a child, before they found out I had magic, they had been loving, kind people who kissed my scrapes and read me bedtime stories.

“What happened to you to turn you against mages and hybrids? How could you start the H.E.? Did you know I was a hybrid when you started it? Are you going to kill me now to further your cause?”

“Yes,” Dad said. “We are going to use you as proof of our conviction to this cause, to show that we will even eradicate our adopted daughter.”

My eyes burned as tears threatened to fall, but I would not let these monsters see my cry. “You are fearful, ignorant, morons. Do you think the royals will be scared of you when they see you murder me? This will only further their resolve to end your group. You are a threat to their son, a son who will find you.”

I hoped he found them. If I couldn’t defeat them and escape, I hoped they would come after them in my memory.

Trying to summon my power proved impossible, which had me panicking. Why couldn’t I access my powers?

“Your powers are being suppressed by the sedative,” Mom said with a smug smirk. “One thing that we can be happy the shifters made is a sedative so powerful that it suppresses all of youOthers’ powers.”

“Did you know that I was a hybrid when you sent me away?” I asked.

Dad sighed and rubbed his temples like I was annoying him or causing him trouble on purpose. “Yes. We learned you were a hybrid and kept it a secret when we sent you away. We thought it would stay a secret, but once it came to light, we realized we had to act.”

“To prove to our followers that we aren’t biased and are committed fully to the cause,” Mom said.

“That’s the absolute dumbest thing I’ve ever heard,” I said and scoffed, shaking my head. “So what? You’re going to livestream my murder in hopes of bringing more people to your side? You realize how absolutely absurd that is, right?”

For some reason, I felt like the longer I kept them talking, the better. If I could delay them, then maybe, just maybe I could also convince them not to kill me.

“Do you know who my real parents are?” I asked. Sirens were incredibly rare, as far as I knew, less than a handful were known to exist outside of Atlantis. If I was part siren like Caleb claimed, was he one of them?

Mom scowled. “We do know.”

I waited, but she didn’t say more. “Who are they?”

Dad and Mom looked at each other and after a moment, Mom sighed and waved her hand towards me.

Dad turned and said, “Your father is dead. Your mother changed her name and is in hiding.”

“Dead?” I asked and frowned. “Was he a hybrid, too? Killed by your organization?”

He shook his head. “Your father, Phillip, was killed by sirens when they discovered he had snuck into Jinla as a supporter of Brayden.”

Brayden had been a hybrid mage and siren, half-brother to King Nico, and had attempted to overthrow the royals.Ultimately, he had been killed, but not after causing a ton of havoc for the people there, especially Princess Jolie and the princes.
