“Your mother, birth name Maya, was a mage who was originally supposed to be betrothed to Nico, but that siren trollop, Jolie, showed up and ruined her chances. Out of spite, your mother started helping your father and Brayden behind the scenes.”

My parents were traitors to the royals. Wow. And I truly was a hybrid. Would this change things with Caleb? At least Brayden wasn’t my father like I’d feared, since that would mean I was related to Caleb. Can you say awkward? Ha.

“Enough talk,” Mom said and turned to the people in the back of the room. “Is the equipment ready to start the livestream?”

“Yes, ma’am,” one of the women said.

Reaching deep within myself, I tried once again to access my powers, but it was like there was a barrier. Dammit.

“Excellent, let’s get things started,” Mom said and clapped her hands together.

“You know, family reunions are known to be awkward, but your giddiness at killing me is incredibly disturbing. Could you tone it down just a bit?”

She ignored my comments, heading to a table where I realized she had makeup brushes and makeup set out so she could look her best as she killed me.

They truly were lost causes.

A prickle of energy along my arm made me look up at it. The bracelet Caleb had given me sparkled in the overhead lights, but otherwise didn’t look any different. Had I imagined it?

A second later that same prickle of energy went through my head.

What the acorn jelly was going on? Was I having an adverse reaction to the sedative? No, that should have happened much sooner if that were the case.

Was it a psychological break?

That would be the icing on the cake, to have a mental breakdown while I was murdered by my adoptive parents.

A scream echoed loudly from outside the room, making everyone inside the room with me turn to face what I assumed was a door since I couldn’t see it.

“What’s going on?” Dad demanded from one of the people in the back.

“I-I don’t know,” he said, hand shaking.

“Go find out,” Mom ordered.

The man and woman in the back looked at each other and after a moment, reluctantly moved in that direction.

They didn’t get very far before the door I hadn’t been able to see flew through the air, slamming against them, and pinned them to the ground.

Caleb strode in, brushing his shoulders off as if kicking or punching the door off its hinges had gotten dust on him. “Good evening,” he said as he entered.

“Get him!” Dad yelled.

Unfortunately for him, the two people left in the room had just watched their friends get squished and when faced with the prince of all five races, they chose to live. They raised their hands and got down on their knees.

Caleb smiled, a smile of pure cocky, sexy confidence, and said, “Good choice.”

Mom groaned, grabbed Dad’s arm, and tossed something on the ground. A puff of smoke exploded and then they were gone.

Caleb scoffed. “Wow, absolutely rude. I came here to introduce myself to the parents of the woman I’m courting and they just left.”

A soft laugh came out of me at the ridiculous line.

He turned to where I was and his eyes widened; rushing over quickly, he unchained me. “Are you alright?”

“Thank you for finding me. How did you do that by the way?”

“Ember, what’s wrong with your scent?” he asked, scowling and sniffing me loudly.
