“We live safer,”she explained.“Stay away from bad people. Hide better.”

“So, I made you better at surviving?”

She bobbed her head.

Exhaling, I nearly collapsed to the ground. “Oh, Natalia. You had me so worried.” Climbing to my feet, I stroked her. “I’m glad you’re all better at surviving. And I’m glad both of you like it here.”

“Oh, talk to donkey,”Winnie begged.“He’s mean to me and I need to talk to him.”

I cringed. “I don’t think I should talk to any other animals if I can help it.” It was already hard to ignore all of their voices, vying for attention.

“What?” Dan asked.

“Winnie wants me to talk to the donkey so she can talk to him to stop him from being mean to her,” I explained.

Dan laughed and shook his head. “That mean brat definitely doesn’t need to be any smarter. He causes enough havoc as it is.” Leaning over, he patted the miniature donkey on the butt. “Don’t you, Gus?”

Gus, brayed and spun around to let Dan pet his head.“Scary man! I love scary man! Good pats. Best pats.”

Snickering, I covered my mouth.

Dan arched a brown and I relayed the donkey’s thoughts.

He threw his head back and laughed, continuing to pat the little donkey.

The werewolf king was definitely not what I expected.

But now I could see where Caleb got his friendly disposition. All of his family were kind and caring.

Maybe it had been a good thing I hadn’t stayed with my adoptive parents. I might have turned out as coldhearted and awful as them.

Chapter

Thirty

When we’d arrived home, Fox held out his cell phone to show me a picture that was circulating the news sites and social media, a picture of Caleb and I looking at each other, smiling, in front of the mall, with the dragon shifter being scolded by Rhys in the background.

It was a really good picture of both Caleb and I, but my cheeks burned remembering how he had teased me about being turned on by seeing him defeat the dragon. Plus, now everyone was speculating about me and who I was. There were also pictures of Riddick and Caleb walking and smiling with me through the mall.

“Now you’re infamous,” Jolie said from her seat on the couch beside Fox. “Your picture is going to circulate even more after the event tomorrow.”

“Speaking of that event,” I said, and Caleb looked up as though the spot on the ceiling was interesting. “What is it?”

“It’s a charity event that we always go to and we make Caleb and Riddick go as well,” Fox explained. “You’ll wear a nice dress, drink some sparkling wine, and dance.”

“Oh, um, pass.” I shook my head and took a step back. Caleb’s eyes lowered and he took a step closer to me. I held up my hands. “You can go without me. I’ll just stay home and practice my magic.”

“You’re going, it’s mandatory,” Caleb said and took a step closer. Bending down until he was eye level with me, he asked, “Why don’t you want to go? I already got you a dress and you lookdeliciousin it.”

Had I not been freaking out about the event, I would have reacted more to that statement, but all I could think about was, “I don’t know how to dance.”

He straightened, shocked, and looked at Jolie before looking back at me. “Oh, I didn’t think about you possibly not knowing how to dance.”

“She did live in the woods like a hermit,” Fox said. Jolie smacked his arm, but he just smiled. “I’m not wrong.”

“You’re not,” I admitted and looked down, embarrassed. Sure, I had danced around my house like a fool while listening to music, but I couldn’t really dance and had no idea how to dance with another person.

“Dance lesson time!” Jolie announced and clapped her hands together as she jumped up.
