“You look sweaty. What were you up to?” Leona asked and waggled her eyebrows.

“They were teaching me to dance,” I explained, ignoring the heat in my cheeks.

Her mouth dropped open. “Oh! We totally should have thought to teach you to dance in the past week with the event coming up tomorrow. Stupid us.”

“It’s okay, she’s a natural,” Jolie said as she rummaged through multiple drawers. “Where is that dang thing?”

“Do you have shoes for your dress?” Leona asked.

“I don’t know,” I admitted. “Caleb bought me more things while I was changing and wouldn’t let me look in the bag.”

“Show her my flats,” Jolie said and waved her hand towards us as she continued looking for whatever it was.

Leona spun around on the square couch thing and pulled open two drawers that were about five inches deep each. She waved me over and I climbed over to look inside.

Dozens of pairs of shoes from ballet flats to heels sparkled inside. “Oh,” I gasped.

“Are any of these close to the color of your dress?” Leona asked.

I pointed at a pair of flats close to the color. “If I recall right, close to this.”

She pulled those flats, a pair of silver sparkly ones covered in rhinestones, and a pair of short heels in similar colors out as well. “Try these on.”

“All of them?” I asked.

She nodded.

“I’ve never worn heels before,” I admitted, but shucked off my tennis shoes and put them on. Standing up slowly, I was surprised they weren’t as hard to stand in as I thought they would be.

“Try walking,” Leona urged me.

I took a few fumble-y steps as I figured out how to walk in them, but they were sort of like the boots I used to have.

“Good,” Leona praised with a nod.

“I think she should wear flats,” Jolie said. “She’s going to be on her feet a lot dancing.”

Leona nodded her agreement. “Yes, for her first event flats would be better. You should start wearing the heels around the house to get more comfortable in them, though.”

Sitting down, I took off the heels, put them back in their spot in the drawer, and put on the flats. They were definitely more comfortable and easier to walk in, like wearing socks with a firmer bottom.

“Ah ha!” Jolie exclaimed and spun around with a dazzling ruby necklace in her hand. Four large tear-shaped rubies in a sort of arrow shape with black metal around them, and a black chain around the side created one of the prettiest necklaces I had ever seen in person before. “What do you think?” Jolie asked.

“That’s gorgeous,” I said.

“Your dress, what’s the neckline like?” Leona asked.

I traced the shape on my front and Jolie’s eyes sparkled and she thrust the necklace at me. “This is perfect!”

“You want me to wear this?” I asked and gingerly took the necklace, which was obviously very expensive. Unlike jewelry I’d bought before, costume jewelry, these rubies were the real deal.

She nodded.

“It’s too expensive for me to wear,” I countered, but couldn’t stop staring at it.

“I’ve got too many too expensive necklaces I never wear,” Jolie countered. “It’ll make me happy to see you wear it tomorrow. Please? Pretty please?” She stuck her lip out in a pout and made her eyes wider.

Chuckling, I agreed.
