“Try adding in a spin,” Jolie ordered and I watched as Caleb released her waist, held the one hand up higher, and Jolie spun beneath it.

“Ready?” Fox asked.

I nodded and bit my lower lip, studying his movements so when he dropped his hand from my waist and his other hand rose up, I spun once fully beneath it.

Jolie clapped. “Beautifully done, Ember! You’re a pro already!”

“Much better than she was the first time,” Fox whispered.

“Hey!” Jolie said.

He flinched. “I forget her hearing is as good as mine sometimes.”

“Mind if I cut in?” Deryn asked beside us.

I yelped and stepped on Fox’s foot. “Sorry!”

Deryn snickered. “Nico is right, it is incredibly fun to startle you.”

“Dad,” Caleb growled.

“Come on, practicing with different partners is good. Knowing the people coming tomorrow, you’ll likely be asked to dance by many of them.”

Caleb growled louder and more serious.

Jolie smacked his shoulder. “She’s not your mate.”

His lip twitched in a snarl, but he folded his arms across his chest and shut up.

Deryn bowed and held out his hand. “May I have this dance?”

“Yes,” I said and nodded.

He straightened, set a hand on my waist and took my other hand. Smiling, he exhaled and said, “And go.”

An hour later, I had danced with all of Caleb’s fathers, who all somehow knew to join us in the ballroom, and I felt much more confident in my dancing.

They taught me another dance as well and I picked that up fast also.

“You are definitely a dancer,” Jolie praised. “I wish I could have picked it up as quick as you did.”

“My toes would have liked that as well,” Deryn teased and Rhys snickered.

“Can I dance with my girlfriend now?” Caleb asked.

Hearing him call me his girlfriend sent a thrill through me and I swallowed hard.

Jolie noticed my reaction and smiled. “No, I think we’re done for the night. You can dance with her tomorrow at the event.” She grabbed my arm and tugged me away from him. “I’ve got to help her pick out jewelry to match her outfit. What color is your dress?”

“Red,” Caleb answered. “Deep red.”

“Oh!” she breathed. “That’s going to look magnificent on you! And I have just the thing to go with it.” Her smile seemed a bit too excited for my liking, but when I looked over my shoulder at Caleb for help, he was surrounded by his fathers, keeping us apart.

He looked over their shoulders at me and winked. “See you later,” he said, a promise in those words I didn’t quite understand.

We walked by Leona on the way and she asked to join us, following as we went to a ginormous walk-in closet that was big enough to be its own room.

Jolie released me next to a square thing that didn’t have sides or a back, but had stitching that reminded me of a couch in the middle of it and I took the opportunity to sit down.
