“Don't worry, I'm not attracted to women, but I loved hearing each of her screams of pain. I'll like yours even more when you see her dead body.”
“No...”
“Do you think I would stay here waiting for you to rescue her? It's too late Mikhail. The woman you love joined the man I loved. She's dead and I think I finally feel vindicated. More than killing you, I wanted to make you suffer.”
I howled with hatred. Feeling the fury burn like a thousand fires, leaving me like a beast.
I went for him, but before I touched him, the other soldiers came forward to protect him. I dodged punches and kicks, with more agility than ever. I went behind one of them and held his head, turning it until I heard the sound of the bones in his neck breaking.
I pushed him on top of the other man, who pulled out a knife at me, but before he could hit me, he was shot. I moved my head to see where the shots came from and saw Marco Bellucci holding the gun.
I didn't stop to thank or say anything to Pietra's father, I could only worry about her.
I charged like a bull towards Andrei. I dodged some of his blows and grabbed the collar of his shirt.
“Where is she?!”
“You can't save her anymore.”
I punched him in the face with all my strength, feeling the bones in his face crack.
“Where?!”
“Kill me if you want. It won't lessen your pain.”
I threw him to the ground, making him sit down and shot him.
“Pietra?” Marco whispered, and we both ran away.
I went from door to door, kicking them until I found her... Andrei was right, the pain was unparalleled and unbearable.
“Pietra!” I knelt down beside her and pulled her into my arms.
I realized what it was like to cry and how heavy and bitter the tears were.
“No!” My scream echoed throughout the room when I saw all the bruises on her body and the blood.
I hadn't gotten there fast enough. I failed to save her.
“Is she...” Marco couldn't even finish the question.
I took my gun and handed it to him. At the height of my despair, I couldn't think straight holding the woman I loved dead and bloody in my arms.
“Do what you've wanted to do since the moment you saw me. You can kill me; my life is worthless without hers.”
Chapter fifty-one
I was walking on a fine line between life and death. Perhaps I had already died, as I no longer felt the same pain as I had a few minutes ago. I tried to remain still while Andrei threw punches and kicks at me, in an attack motivated by anger and resentment. He wanted to kill me and that's what I made him believe.
I slowed down my breathing and tried to disguise my pulse, using my medical knowledge. I wanted him to believe I was dead or maybe it was me who believed I was still alive.
My consciousness became weak, and I couldn't understand what was happening properly.
Was death like this?
Then I heard a scream, something that sounded more like delirium, because it echoed in my mind.
“Pietra!”
