“Stay here, please. Now it's up to us.”

It was hard to back away, because I was afraid that if I left her, something terrible might happen again.

I felt a hand touch my shoulder and I turned back, noticing that the Belluccis had come in another car. Marco was closest to me, and the other two brothers watched from afar, as did the Kiev boss and the other men.

Marco patted my shoulder, and I was surprised when he hugged me.

My father had taught me to be strong, to be cruel and deadly, but at that moment I surrendered to his affection and cried like a boy.

I could have all of Russia, but I learned that some things don't mean anything if we don't have others.

Chapter fifty-three

My muscles were aching as if a truck had driven over me. Maybe I had faced a version of that. The beating had left me on the verge of death and when I opened my eyes and began to see the light, I thought that perhaps I had really died.

Is this heaven?

“Pietra?”

“Mikhail...”

“I'm here, love.” I felt the weight of his lips on my hand, and I forced a little more to open my eyes.

I saw a hospital room, with some signs in Russian on the walls and I saw Mikhail crouched next to the bed, watching me carefully.

“How are you feeling?”

I was once again trapped by his blue eyes.

“As if I had died and come back.”

“The important thing is that you came back to us.”

“Dad!” I moved my head and found him standing in a corner of the room, just watching me. He was really there; it wasn't just my delusion.

“You scared us all, kid.”

“I'm sorry.”

“It wasn't your fault,” Mikhail said. “I should have protected you; I couldn't have let that happen...”

I stretched my hand with effort and placed it over his lips.

“You couldn't have predicted it. I'm here now.”

“That will never happen again.”

“I know it won’t.” I caressed his face. “Dad?” I raised my head looking for his blue eyes. “I can't marry Lansky.”

“Get well, my dear. We will talk about this at another time.”

I nodded. I knew I had dropped a bomb on my father and the entire family. It wouldn't be easy for him to go back on an agreement, but after what happened, I thought he couldunderstand that Mikhail was worthy of being with me. Just like I wouldn't give up being with him.

Epilogue

Months later...

“White looks really good on you,” my sister commented.
