“Thanks.” I smiled as I ran my hands over the side of the dress, feeling the lace and all the carvings, embroidery and stones that made it up.

I looked in the mirror and felt more beautiful than ever, I looked like a true princess in that wedding dress, completedwith a diamond tiara. I had been afraid of this moment, for a long time, and I still had butterflies in my stomach that made me restless and my breathing difficult.

“Don't forget to call.”

“Don't worry, mom.” I turned my head and found her behind me, I smiled at her. “You can also text.”

“I will.”

I let out a long sigh. Trying to shake the tremor in my legs.

“She's getting married before she turns twenty-one,” Nina commented, my cousin, who was sitting in the back of the room, just watching.

“After the confusion in Russia. The last thing they're talking about is the age at which Pietra will get married,” Perla grumbled.

“I have this for you.”

I turned around when I heard my grandmother's voice. She approached me and handed me a pearl bracelet.

“I got it from my mother when I was your age and I want you to keep it to remember us when you’re far away.”

“Thank you very much, grandma!” I pulled her by the shoulders and brought her to me in a hug.

My heart was heavy, I knew that with so many miles, I would miss them so much, but I was going to start a new stage in my life, and I was also looking forward to it.

“You can also send me messages.”

“I was thinking about coming to visit you.”

“It will be even better.”

“I want to go, too!” Nina jumped on my bed. “Will Dad let me?”

“We'll see about that later, my child.”

“Fine.”

We heard a knock on the door and my mother went to open it.

“My love.” She smiled when she saw my father.

“Are you ready to go, Pietra?” He turned directly to me.

“I am.”

“Everyone get to your places,” he told the other women who were in the room. “It's time to go to church.”

“Let's go!” My grandmother agitated the other women, taking them out of the room.

My father extended his arm to me, and I took it, letting him guide me down the hall to the stairs, where we stopped, and he turned to me.

“Are you sure this is what you want to do?” He lowered his gaze to meet mine firmly and I returned it in kind.

“The most certain I’ve ever been.”

“I have no power to protect you there.”

“But he will take care of me. I will also be a queen just like mom and I will be able to take care of myself.”
