“I’d think so.” I didn't pay much attention.

“You are young and single, soon many candidates from all over Russia will appear. Now that you’re the boss you need to think about marriage and heirs.”

“I have no doubt that they will all start offering me their daughters as if it were a beauty show.”

“I assume you'll want the prettiest one, but you also need to think about the importance of this alliance. Perhaps...”

“I don't need your advice in this area, Sergei.”

“But!” He was surprised by my tone of voice and the way I cut him off.

“I already know who I want.” I snapped my fingers and crossed my arms, looking straight ahead without wanting to dwell too much on the subject or attract too much attention to a delicate situation.

As long as Pietra was not under my control, it was better that no one knew about my interest in her, not even my advisor. I knew that Sergei would do anything for the mafia and his neck, which assured me that he would betray me if necessary.

“You do?”

“Yes.”

“Not Vladimir's daughter, I assume.”

“No.”

“Who is she? If she is suitable, we can begin the wedding preparations. It will be better to take a position on this before the auctions start.”

“For now, you don't need to know who she is.”

“But I need to know if she is suitable, start negotiations...”

“It's my marriage, let me decide about it,” I said in a firm and imposing voice that made him immediately shut up and not think about questioning me.

There were other rumors about me that spread besides the fact that my mother was a prostitute. I was a voracious killer and no one who had stood in my way had survived. While Igor was being prepared to be a leader, my father had made me a bloodthirsty beast and anywhere in Russia they knew that there was no act more stupid than daring to go against me.

Chapter twelve

“Look, grandma, how mine turned out!” Nina lifted her towel so that Rosimeire could see the embroidery that her youngest granddaughter had done.

I had pricked my finger thousands of times and had not achieved any remotely acceptable result.

It was late afternoon, and the granddaughters were gathered with our grandmother in the mansion's garden. While Perla painted the tree whose top covered the table where we had lunch on Sundays, the rest of us tried to learn embroidery.

“It's perfect, Nina.”

“Thank you, grandma, but if I bring a machine...”

“No machines for today, okay? We can put your dad's equipment aside for a while and brush up on your manual skills a little.”

“Okay.” My cousin shrugged and focused again.

Manuela had already put the towel aside and made me realize that I wasn't the only one who had given up on embroidery. Grandma approached us and stopped next to the oldest, first, she bowed and handed her a book.

“Thanks.” Manuela raised her head and smiled.

Then it was my turn to receive a book. I was surprised when I saw that it was one of human anatomy. Something I was studying in the early stages of my medical course.

“I loved it, grandma!” I turned my head to her and smiled.

“I think it will be more useful than embroidery.”
