“It might draw too much attention.”

“And be a reminder for those around us to respect us.”

“It might be a little bloody, but you're right. Fear has always generated respect.”

“Excellent.”

“There is another matter I would like to discuss. Many of the leaders remain interested in introducing their daughters. They are well-bred women from all over Russia.”

I let go of the bar and landed on my feet. The impact of my landing echoed through the small gym and made him look at me.

“I already spoke to you about this.”

“Until a bride is presented, candidates will be offered.”

“I already said that I will resolve this matter.”

“If I can help...”

“It is not necessary.”

“As soon as you have children...”

“Sergei” I turned towards him “The decision on this is mine.”

“I'm not questioning this, but...”

“I intend to go on a trip, but I want your discretion.” I changed the subject.

“Trip to where?”

“Italy.”

“Pakhan, it's a hostile territory with an enemy mafia.”

“I know that well, so I need your discretion. I don't want anyone other than the men I choose myself to know.”

“Alright. I will do whatever you ask.”

“Right. Now get out!” I pointed to the door. “I need to finish my work out and take a shower for the meeting later.”

Sergei nodded and left me alone.

Chapter sixteen

I was sitting on the red sofa in my grandmother's huge library, I had chosen one of the many books, but I couldn't concentrate on the story, just as I hadn't paid attention to anything all day.

I kept looking at my cell phone waiting for another message from him, at the same time hoping he wouldn't send it, because it was the best for both of us. Grandma used to say that anyone who played with fire ended up getting burned, and I was sure there was no way I could get out of this situation without burning myself all over.

The attraction and fear were equal, and that insane tug of war was driving me crazy.

I closed the book, throwing it to the side and took a deep breath. I put my feet on the couch and hugged my legs. I knew what I had to do so why was it still so difficult?

There was a flavor to that situation that was attracting me much more than it should, but at the same time it was as if I were a sailor being lured by the song of a siren and who would end up drowning and disappearing at the bottom of the ocean.

“Found you!” My sister appeared at the library door, and I turned to her with a calm expression, trying not to show that I was freaking out.

I knew very well what she would say if I told her that I simply couldn't help but be attracted to Mikhail.
