I got up from bed when the sun's rays touched my face waking me up in the morning. I stretched as I walked to the window and pulled the curtain a little further so I could look down.

Four years had passed since that party, but I often still dreamed of the same moment when my eyes met the Russian's intense blues. I didn't know him, if my family knew anything about him, they didn't make a point of telling me either. However, at that same time, the motto against the Russians had not changed, they were enemies.

I thought it was completely impossible for me to ever see that man again and if I did, I knew we wouldn't get involved.

I leaned over the windowsill and continued looking down. My room overlooked the entrance to the house, and from there I got most of my information about who came and went from the mansion.

I heard a knock on the door, and I immediately turned around when I saw my sister enter without waiting for an answer. Perla was the same age as me, we had been together since my mother's belly, but I liked the fact that we didn't have exactly the same face, as each of us had our own personality.

“Good morning!” She threw herself on my bed, messing with her dark hair and putting it back.

“Good morning.”

“What is it?”

“Nothing.” I took a few steps away from the window and walked away.

“I heard the Mancinis are coming here today.”

“Heard where?”

“I heard the employees talking in the kitchen.”

“You can't stop snooping, can you?”

“Are you saying you're not curious too?” She stretched, pulling her legs and hugging them, placing her feet on my mattress, which made me purse my lips.

“I'm, but I imagine they're coming to see Aunt Tati.”

“It looks like they're coming to see us.”

“Us?” I raised an eyebrow, a little concerned. “What would the Sicilians want with us?”

“We'd have to ask Dad to be sure, but I have my suspicions.”

I sat down next to her, and we both swallowed hard at the same moment. We looked at each other and didn't need to say it out loud to figure out what was happening. There was no other reason the Sicilians wanted to see us than the main function of a woman in the mafia, to be a bargaining chip.

I knew very well what my parents' marriage had been like and no matter how many years passed, some things never changed. My destiny would not be very different from that of my mother.

“Go brush your teeth.” Perla pushed me, giggling and making me relax a little.

“I am going.”

“I asked Gabriela to prepare us pancakes with fruit jelly. I know very well how much you like it.”

“Thanks.” I got out of bed and went to the nearest bathroom down the hall to get ready for the day.

It was a Saturday, and, on the weekends, we had a break from our tasks. While we were children, there wasn't much distinction between us and the boys in the family. We had classes together and were accompanied by a teacher to answer our questions. As we grew up, while we studied music, computers and languages, they were learning how to disassemble weapons and the how to tell the purity of drugs.

My mother told me it was better this way, we didn't need to get our hands dirty or deal with the weight on our conscience for having taken someone's life, but sometimes I felt like I could do more for the family than just sit there waiting for what fate had in store for me.

After we turned fifteen, Perla and I joined mom, aunt Tati and our cousin Manuela in managing the philanthropy company. I liked working there, even though we only went a few times a week, and, with my mother's help, I had convinced my father to allow me study to become a doctor, which I had started a few months ago. I had theoretical classes with a teacher at the mansion and would soon be able to go to college for practical classes.

I left the bathroom, after drying my face on a towel and met the family matriarch in the hallway.

“Grandma!”

“Pietra.” Rosimeire Bellucci pulled me into a hug and kissed the top of my head. “Everything alright with you?”
