“Yes.”

“I didn't see you and your sister at breakfast.”

“Maybe I slept a little longer than the bed.” I made a face and my grandmother laughed.

“You both can't go without eating.”

“We won’t. Perla has already talked to the cook about making pancakes for us.”

“Good.”

“I'm going now, grandma!” I walked past her and gave her a kiss on the cheek.

“Take care of yourself.”

“You, too.”

I walked past my bedroom door and signaled for my sister to come with me. Perla got out of bed, and we walked together to the kitchen.

“Good morning, ladies!” Gabriela, the kitchen chef, smiled at us as soon as we entered the room.

“Good morning!”

We sat down at the small table in the corner, and she came with a tray to serve breakfast.

“Do you know if Miss Manuela will come down to eat?”

“Didn't she have breakfast with everyone in the morning?” I asked.

“The men left very early, it was barely light, and I didn't see her while the table was still set...”

“Hey!” The cook barely finished speaking before my cousin entered the kitchen. She was panting and sweaty, fixing the ponytail that tied her hair back. “I was running around the house. I'm just going to take a shower and come back downstairs to eat something.”

“Alright, miss.”

“Thanks.”

My cousin waved at us, and my sister and I waved back at her.

Manuela was the oldest among our cousins. Uncle Theo's first daughter, she was about to turn twenty-one, while my sister and I were nineteen and our other cousin, Nina, was sixteen.

I picked up the glass of orange juice and took a few sips. Perla dragged the pancake closer and cut off a piece, tossing it into her mouth. As we enjoyed our juices and pancakes, I heard the sound of cars parking. It could just be my father or one of my uncles coming home, however the butterflies in my stomach and a feeling of discomfort did not subside as it should have.

“Is everything alright?” Perla placed her fork on the side of her plate and looked at me.

I nodded.

“Just thinking.”

“Thinking about what?”

“Nothing important.”

“Pietra ...” She twisted her lips and gave me a serious expression.

“What?”

“You know you can tell me.”
