“Don't start with this Romeo and Juliet story, sis. Do I have to remind you how that one ends?”

I shook my head no.

“Nobody wants a tragedy.”

“I don't either.”

“Then focus on that and stay with Steven. For all that is holy and for the good of us all, get that Russian out of your head.”

“If only it were that simple.” I shrugged as I looked away.

“Pietra!”

“Steven won't accept me.”

“What are you talking about? You are Pietra Bellucci. Despite being brainless, it's probably the best marriage he'll ever get.”

“I'm no longer...” I stopped mid-sentence as I bit my tongue. If my sister were already outraged at me before finding out, maybe it wouldn't be the best idea to reveal this information to her. I didn't want to make everything worse.

“What are you no longer, Pietra?”

“Leave it alone.”

“I don't believe it.” She lowered her head and covered her eyes as if she had received the terrible news of someone's death. “You didn't do that.”

I went silent.

“Crap!”

“I'm not sorry.”

“God help us because you have completely lost your mind. Do you know how horrible it will be for you when Steven finds out? When daddy finds out?”

“An alliance with the Russians could be much better than strengthening ties with the Americans.”

“Can we get along with the Russians?”

I nodded my head yes.

“This is not a fairy tale.”

“Our father rules the Italians and Mikhail, the Russians, seems quite possible to me.”

Perla shook her head. She disagreed with me, even though I saw reasons why the alliance would become something plausible.

“You know that this thought of yours will ruin us.”

“I want to be with him, but I don't think I need to lose you.”

“Why don't you just accept Steven?” She leaned forward and held my hands, looking at me with an almost pleading look. “Don't you realize how lucky you were that dad chose him for you? Don't make everything worse.”

“I don't want him.”

Perla let go of my hand and snorted.

“When all this shit blows up, don't say I didn't warn you.”

“Thank you for worrying about me.”
