Pietra:

I imagine you have important matters to resolve.

Mikhail:

Some.

Pietra:

Will we talk later?

Mikhail:

You know we will.

Pietra:

I’ll wait.

I sent her the last message and was about to put the device away when I jolted inside the vehicle.

“Did we go through a pothole?” I questioned.

“Someone crashed into us.”

I didn't even have time to question who before the second clash made me shake even more. The cell phone slipped out of my hands and ended up on the floor of the vehicle, but before I could pick it up, I heard a third blow. The car I was in was armored and the shots ricocheted outside, but the driver was dodging to try to get us out of reach of the pursuers.

“Who is it?” I turned my body to look back.

“I don't know, sir,” the driver replied.

“I'm going to shoot them,” the one next to him warned.

“Do not open the window!” I ordered quickly enough that he couldn't complete the action. “It will take away the only protection we have.”

“Then what do we do, sir?”

“Evade them.”

I knelt in the back seat, looking at the street and observed the popular car that followed us. I saw the license, but I didn't even need to check it to be sure it was a fake. The men who were chasing me were from the mafia, allies of my father who had turned against me.

“Fuckers!” the driver grumbled when he had to brake to avoid hitting a truck coming in the opposite direction.

“Pay attention,” I shouted at him. “Or we're all going to die.”

“Sorry, sir.” He stepped on the accelerator, and I had to restrain myself from losing control.

The other men who came in a second car were trying to deal with my pursuers. I saw them exchange shots and one of the soldiers die before they finally caused the pursuing vehicle to hit the highway wall and explode from the shots fired at the fuel tank.

I didn't want to think about it, but until I found and killed the bastard who insisted on trying to kill me, it was probably safer for Pietra to stay where she was, and for them not know about her existence in my life, or they could use her to get to me.

Chapter forty

“Here.” My grandmother handed me a glass of water with a pill.

“Thanks.” I picked it up and threw it in my mouth, swallowing it with water.

“Are you taking the pills from the other box I gave you?”
