“Yes.”

“It will be safer after the first month.”

“Thank you for what you’re doing, Grandma.” I smiled at her as I returned the empty glass and curled up on the sofa in her library.

“It's a miracle they haven't caught you running away at dawn yet...”

Dona Rosi stopped mid-sentence when she heard a knock on the door which was followed by my mother's entry.

“Hello!”

“Laís!” Grandma smiled at her as if nothing were happening and we hadn't been caught talking about something she shouldn't know about.

Deep down, I even felt the need to talk to my mother. Telling about what was happening to me and sharing the love I was feeling for someone but anticipated that it would end up putting her in a difficult situation. She couldn't keep that secret from my father, and I didn't want to cause any friction between them. For now, the most prudent thing was to hide it from both of them until I could find a solution.

“I was looking for you, Pietra.”

“For me, mom?” I raised my eyebrows, surprised by her statement.

“Yes, the stylist just arrived to take the measurements and make the dress for the party. Your sister is already with her, and I came looking for you.”

“Oh, of course!” I smiled awkwardly.

“Shall we?” She gestured for me to follow her.

“Go.” My grandmother patted me on the back to get me up.

I nodded and went with my mother to the hallway. She wrapped her arms around my shoulders and gave me a gentle smile.

“Is everything okay with you, Pietra?”

“Oh!” I swallowed hard and tried to hide my astonishment at her question. “Everything is great with me, why wouldn't it be?”

“I noticed that you've been more isolated and acting strangely lately. I know it's not been easy for you to go through this whole situation, but I want you to know that I'm here to help you in any way I can.”

“Thanks.”

She leaned over and placed a kiss on the top of my head as she pulled me closer.

“Steven Lansky will make a good husband. Your father has spoken very highly of him. When you go to live in New York, don't forget to call me.”

“All right, mom.”

“Is it a promise?”

“Yes.” I tried to maintain the smile, even though I had no intention of moving to the United States.

“I'm sure you can visit me too.”

“I'd love to, but we’d need to schedule it.”

“Yes.”

She continued pushing me to my sister's room where there was a woman taking measurements and whispering some comments that I was too far away to hear.

“This is my other daughter.” Mom caressed my shoulders when she caught the seamstress’s attention.

“Equally beautiful.”
