“Thanks.” I took some with my hand and threw them into my mouth, chewing slowly.

“What are you watching?” She tilted her head to take a better look at the large television screen on the wall on the other side of the room.

“Just a silly reality show.” I shrugged.

“Oh, I've heard about that one. It's the one where couples go to the resort and can't make out.”

“Yeah.”

“Sounds like fun.”

I nodded and grabbed more popcorn.

My sister watched, until she turned and looked at me. Her serious expression anticipated what she could say and made me very uncomfortable.

“Pietra?”

“What?” I turned my face away, pretending that the television was much more interesting than her expression.

“You stopped, didn't you?”

“Did I stop?”

“Talking to him.” She lowered her voice so that no one passing by in the hallway could hear us. “I hope you managed to get some sense into your head and realized that your thing with the Russian wasn't going to work.”

“Yeah...” I didn't delay and I didn't say anything so that my sister wouldn't call me a liar when the truth came out.

“Dad chose an incredible groom for you and I'm sure you'll be very happy.”

“And what are your expectations regarding Luca?” I diverted the subject from myself to her, so I wouldn't have to wrap myself up in another lie.

“Look how handsome!” She took out her cell phone and showed me a photo of the man wearing just swim trunks andsunglasses on top of a yacht. Behind him there was a crystal-clear sea, in shades of green and blue, with a clear sky and a strong sun, beyond him it was possible to see the coast of the island.

“Him, the boat or the landscape?”

“The entire thing.” My sister's cheeks flushed, and I laughed.

“He is handsome.”

“Luca told me that he really likes going on the yacht and that if I want, he will always take me out with him.”

“I'm sure you'll have fun.”

“Me too.”

As Perla smiled, I wondered if she had any idea what it was like to be alone with a man, to enjoy his love and all the sensations that touching could provide. Probably not, my sister followed the rules and I doubt Luca would risk attracting Dad's wrath.

“Are you looking forward to the party?” I continued to focus on her until I had an excuse to escape her gaze and sneak away.

“A lot and you?”

“Also.”

“The stylist said she'll bring the dresses tomorrow so we can try them on before the final adjustments.”

“Wonderful.”

“Have you decided on hair and makeup yet?”
