“Not yet.”

“I wonder if we look on the internet if the hairdresser could reproduce it?”

“I don't know. Let's take a photo and send it to her asking.”

“Good idea.”

Perla took out her phone and I slumped on my sister's shoulder, watching some images with her. I had to have a plan, even though I still couldn't think of anything. I would talk to my grandmother so that together we could come up with some strategy.

Chapter forty-three

I stopped with the motorcycle in the same alley where I used to park to meet Pietra when I saw her in the early hours of the morning. I took off my helmet, placed it on the vehicle and straightened my blond hair, combing it back with my fingertips. I straightened my tuxedo tie and checked the makeup on my fingers that was covering my tattoos, as well as on my neck.

Walking alone had some advantages. It was much easier to blend in and go unnoticed, especially when it came to breaking into the mansion of the most dangerous family in Italy, but it also came with risks. I was on my own and there was noone to protect me if I was caught. It was insanely risky, and I might not get out of that place alive, however, it was to see Pietra and because of her I was capable of facing anything.

I could be the leader of the mafia in Russia and have reached a position that no one believed I would achieve; however, it didn't feel complete or enough without her by my side.

I took the mask and placed it on. The idea of the masquerade ball had been a good one, because otherwise I wouldn't have been able to be among them without someone recognizing me. There was little relationship between Russians and Italians, but it was very likely that at least some of them had already seen my face somewhere.

I approached the mansion, going around it on the sides, on the other side of the street. I had studied the place before and researched where the cameras' blind spots were, going to a part of the wall that Pietra jumped over to meet me.

I climbed it and jumped, landing on my feet in a grassy area.

“Did you hear that?” One of the soldiers questioned and came towards me.

Before I could hide, he saw me.

“Damn it!” I mumbled softly.

He pulled out the gun, but before he pointed it at me, I kicked his hand and made it fall. I got closer and dodged a punch, turning behind the guy and grabbing his neck. So, he wouldn't make any noise, I got him in a choke hold, stopping him from breathing and talking. The guy struggled against myarms, trying to free himself, until he lost his strength and ended up blacking out.

I pulled him behind a bush and made sure he was dead.

Others came to check what could have happened, but I remained hidden until they left and searched other areas of the mansion. With a small army it would never be possible to do that, luckily, I had gotten used to working alone.

I came out from behind the bush and walked around the house. The largest concentration of people and soldiers was at the entrance, where they checked the guests and made sure there were no intruders. I turned around and went in through the back door, into the kitchen.

“I'm sorry. I think I ended up getting lost.” I laughed awkwardly at one of the women who was preparing the food and was startled by my presence as soon as I passed by her.

“The party is going on in the living room, sir.”

“Of course! I was just there, and I don't know what happened to me. I will get back.”

I pointed and the woman showed me the correct path.

I left the room where the furniture had been removed, giving way to a spacious lounge with several guests. There must have been at least a hundred people there and it was easy to blend in among them.

Chapter forty-four

As I walked down the stairs alongside my sister, I looked into our living room and was surprised by the number of people there. Through the window, I could also see some that had taken up place around tables in the garden. The entire house was well lit and decorated. Perla was beaming with happiness and deep down I felt like I should be the same way, maybe I would be if my fiancé was the man I really wanted.

We finished going down the stairs and the first person to approach us was my father. He was neatly groomed in a tuxedo and his gray hair was perfectly combed. My mother was arm inarm with him, magnificent in a golden dress that made her look like an extension of the sun itself. I was counting on her beauty being enough to overshadow me.

“My daughters.”

“Dad,” Perla and I said together.

“You re beautiful.” He bent down and kissed each one on the forehead.
