Page 14 of Love, Lena

Lena tenses next to me, and both of us stare at each other with wide eyes.

“Shit! What do we do?” She hisses at me.

My first instinct is to tell her to hide or to maybe come up with a reason for why Lena is here so early, but then I realize that I don’t want to. I don’t want to hide my relationship with Lena. I want to be with her, and I want everyone to know. It’s time that I man up and tell Charlie that I’ve been in love with his sister since we were kids and that we’re together now.

“I’ll talk to him,” I tell her, and she watches me in shock as I climb out of bed and pull on some clothes.

She hurries to get dressed as I head for the door and I take a deep breath before I go to face my best and oldest friend.

“Hey,” I greet him, and he smiles over his shoulder as he messes with my coffee pot.

“Hey, want some coffee?”

“Sure.”

“What’s Lena’s car doing here?” He asks me as the machine starts to brew the coffee.

“She stayed here last night,” I start, and he leans back against the kitchen counter.

His face is blank, and anxiety spikes in my body as I face him.

“We’re together, Charlie.”

“You and Lena,” he says flatly, and I nod.

Lena comes out of my room and looks between the two of us. She looks so nervous, but she lifts her chin as she comes to stand by my side. I wrap my arm around her waist, trying to comfort her as we face Charlie.

“Yeah, we’re together,” Lena confirms.

“We love each other. We have for years, but I never did anything because I didn’t want to ruin our friendship,” I tell him. “I can’t fight my feelings anymore, though.”

He studies us, and I can feel how tense Lena is as she leans against me.

“I hope that you can be happy for us and that this doesn’t ruin our friendship,” I say, my voice coming out tight.

I’m just as nervous as Lena. We both stare at Charlie as we wait to see what he has to say.

“Well,” he finally says. “It’s about damn time.”

“What?” Lena croaks as I let out a huge exhale.

“It’s about time. I’ve known that you two love each other for years. Hell, the whole town has. I never brought it up because I didn’t think it was my place.”

“You’re not mad?” I ask him, staring at him in shock.

“No, I’m not mad. I know you’re a good guy and you won’t hurt Lena.”

Lena and I share a look, and I’m not sure how to feel right now. Relieved that I didn’t ruin our friendship, but also kind of pissed off that I wasted so much time staying away from Lena.

“Besides,” Charlie says as he glances at Lena. “I’ve been in love with Kerry for just as long, so it would be pretty hypocritical of me to be upset about this when I’ve been trying to be with Kerry.”

“You and Kerry?” Lena asks, and I blink. “Does she know that?”

“She will. Soon,” Charlie vows.

I guess that makes sense. He was just as worried as I was when we found out that Lena and Kerry were at Murphy’s Bar the other night. I thoughtit was about Lena, but now that I think about it, he went for Kerry while I went for Lena.

“So, if you wanted my blessing or whatever, then you have it,” Charlie says as the coffee machine finishes.
