She hangs up. I hope I didn’t tick her off.
When she arrives, I’m even more surprised. She parks and climbs out of a massive, lifted pink truck. She’s young, she’s perky, and she’s wearing designer clothing. Her work bag’s pink, and it’s Prada. She looks like Monster Truck Barbie.
She drops the Prada bag on the ground like it’s just any old canvas duffel. “Where’s the busted main?”
I show her.
Surprisingly, she’s competent.
Even while wielding a pink shovel.
“Did you need a hand or anything?” I ask.
“Maybe from that handsome one.” She points at Alexei and smiles.
He looks decidedly uncomfortable.
“Actually, he has to help our trainer, John.” I toss my head. “Remember, honey? You’ve got some work to do?”
Alexei’s eyes light up. “Right. I almost forgot.” He beams at me. “I’ll be in the arena if you need me, angel.”
Angel.
I hate how hearing him call me that makes me smile—like an idiot. I know it’s fake. Under the guise of protecting him from a flirting plumber, I pretended we were together, and he went along with it. No biggie.
But for some reason, I’m standing here like an idiot, wishing it was real.
“You alright?” the pink plumber asks, her eyes sparkling in a knowing way.
“Of course.” I hold out my hand. “Need me to dig?”
She shoves the end into the ground and leans on it. “Not really. I was just testing to see whether he was single.”
“Oh.”
“Looks like he’s not.”
I shrug.
“How long have you been together?”
This is getting awkward fast. “Not very long,” I say.
“You look nice together,” she says.
“I’m not much for boyfriends,” I say. “The whole thing feels weird to me.”
The woman smiles. “It should feel weird, but in a good way.” Her eyebrows bounce. “If it doesn’t, you’re doing it wrong.”
I can’t help my snort.
“I’ve fixed it.”
“Wait.” I look at the main. “All you did was dig around it and. . .” I wrack my brain. Did she cut or replace any pipe?
She waves her hand and the dirt shifts, filling the hole.
My breath catches.
