It’s hard to believe I have been living with Eli for over a year. The beginning of our relationship wasn’t ideal, and the drama that ensued a few years later was not how I saw my love story being written. Still, I wouldn’t change it for the world. Because of that, I have my beautiful baby girl, Maddie, and an amazing mate whose love is unwavering. Maddie and I are headed to Eli’s office to give him some exciting news. My phone rings, and Paige’s name flashes across the navigation screen in the SUV.
“Hello, Paige.”
“Girl! I said call me back when you know! That was over an hour ago!”
“Don’t you think I should tell Eli first?”
“No! I am far more important! You know this!”
“Hi, Auntie Paige!” Maddie squeals from the back.
“Hi, sweet pea! Are you having a good day?”
“Yup, we are going to see Daddy.”
“How lovely! I see how it is, Quinn; he is more important than me, I get it.”
“You are so friggen' melodramatic!”
“Hardly. Anyway, I have some news of my own. I signed up for the app.”
“You did!” I’m shocked. She has been talking about joining the mail order app like I did for over a year, but she hasn’t done it yet.
“Yes…I’m so tired of being alone. I hate to say it, but I want what you and Eli have. All the ooey gooey mush you guys put out is simultaneously sickening and making me envious. ” My heart breaks for her. She puts on this front that she is happy with her life, away from pack life, but I know she’s lonely. It’s the little moments when she is watching Maddie play when I see a crack in her facade. She craves a family but she wants one on her own terms.
“I am so happy for you, Paige. I think this was the right choice.”
“I hope so.”
“Look, we just pulled into Eli’s office. I’ll call you on my way home, ok?”
“Alright, sounds good. Tell Eli I say hi.”
“Will do. Love ya.”
“Love ya.” The phone cuts out, and I park the SUV.
“Ok, Maddie. Are you ready to see Daddy?”
“Ya!”
I grab the packed lunch and then grab Maddie from the back, placing her on the ground. She wraps her hand around mine as we head into the office. It’s not a big office space, so meeting everyone who works here was pretty easy. We say hi to everyone and make our way to Eli’s door. Evelyn, Eli’s secretary, is tapping away on her laptop.
“Hi Evelyn, is Eli busy?”
“For you two? Absolutely not. That man would drop a major construction contract if you showed up.” She laughs and winks at me. “You go on in, he’ll be happy to see you.”
I knock on the door and then open it to find Eli bent over a stack of papers, pen twirling in his fingers.
“Well if it isn’t my two favorite girls. What are you doing here?”
“We thought we would bring you lunch. An impromptu lunch as a family..”
