“Shit.” Jude’s mumbled curse had me turning.

Hazel gasped. “Your stitches.”

Sure enough, there was a growing bright red spot on Jude’s shoulder from where he’d been shot and the stitches had pulled open.

“Dammit, Jude,” Rhett started, rolling off the bed and stalking over to the beta. Worry pinched his brow. “I knew this was too much.”

Jude scoffed. “I’m fine. Just need to patch it up?—”

“You need rest,” Rhett snapped, but then looked back at Hazel. His lips twisted into a frown.

“It’s okay,” Hazel whispered, resting her cheek on my shoulder as she watched them. “Go take care of Jude.”

“No.” Jude shook his head. “Right now we’re taking care of you.”

Hazel smiled. “You did, and I’ll have Crew or Kellan get you if I need you again. Promise.”

“We can’t leave you,” Rhett replied, looking conflicted.

“I’m feeling better,” Hazel tried.

Now I scoffed “Because you just got knotted, sugar. Your hormones are flying high right now with alpha pheromones and omega endorphins.”

She frowned, her nose wrinkling. “Jude needs rest.”

“I’m fine,” the beta insisted, sounding annoyed. “How about if Rhett helps me bandage this up, and then we’ll come upstairs and I can rest here?”

Hazel relaxed in my arms and nodded. “Deal. And I don’t think it’ll be as bad, it was just not knowing where anyone was and thinking you’d all left me.”

That was a donkey kick to the balls.

I rubbed my cheek against hers, my chest rumbling in a purr that I hoped soothed the last of her unease.

“We’ll be right back, dove,” Rhett promised, coming over to kiss her. He lingered, taking his time until I finally broke their kiss by turning slightly.

Jude was next, kissing her like a man going off to war instead of just down a flight of stairs.

Once they’d gone, I turned back to the soft little omega in my arms. “You should probably eat more while you can.”

Her head cocked. “I could be wrong, but I don’t think my heat is as bad as before.”

“Probably not,” I conceded, shifting to the edge of a pile of flannel blankets. “I should’ve paid more attention in alpha designation classes, I know there’s something about knotting and spunk that helps with the fever and cramps.”

Her brows shot up. “Spunk, huh?”

I rolled my eyes. “Semen sounded too clinical.”

She giggled. “Fair enough.” Her smile slowly faded, but didn’t vanish completely. “Kellan?”

“Yeah?”

“Thank you for finding me,” she whispered.

My eyes shut as a pang ricocheted through my chest. “Hazel, it fucking kills me how long we left you in there. The shit they did to you…” A growl built in my chest.

Her small hands came up to frame my face. “I don’t blame any of you for that.”

“You don’t have to,” I rasped. “We blame ourselves.”
