“Probably,” Kellan agreed, kneeling close to me.

Slamming my eyes shut, I inhaled and was surrounded by the sharp scent of peppermint and lemon. It helped clear some of the fog surrounding me, and I opened my eyes.

“What’s your name?” Kellan asked me, his voice patient and gentle.

“Hazel,” I managed through chattering teeth.

“Pretty name for a pretty girl,” he remarked with a smile that showed a deep dimple in his right cheek.

I snorted, not sure how pretty I looked huddled on the ground as a building burned at my back. “What’s going on?” I asked in a small voice.

His gaze sharpened into something fierce, protective. “Hazel, I’m Agent Kellan Raines-Dutton. We’re with an FBI task force. The man you knew as Morris is one of us, and part of my pack. His real name is Agent Jude Morris-Dutton. He’s our beta. The man who took him to the helicopter is also part of our pack. His name’s Rhett.”

I frowned, trying to keep up. “Why?”

Another smile that made my pulse race. “We’re here to rescue you.”

“Rescue?” I echoed, feeling my eyes go wide. This had to be a dream.

He nodded. “Yeah, sugar. Can I pick you up and take you to one of the helicopters? We need to get you checked out at a hospital, and we can call your family?—”

“No family,” I cut him off. No, that wasn’t right. My head snapped up. “Logan!”

He blinked, his gaze snapping to the man still hovering behind me before coming back. “Logan?”

“He’s still inside,” I started, trying to get up. My knees buckled, and hands caught me from behind. I whimpered, the touch all wrong.

“Silas!” Kellan growled, pulling me from the other man so abruptly my head hit his wide chest.

This is better.

Unable to stop myself, I nuzzled closer and inhaled his summery scent again. His bare skin was warm under my touch, and I wondered if his skin would be sweet like peppermint or tart like lemons if I licked him.

A stupid giggle slipped from me.

“Fuck,” Kellan growled. “She’s definitely in shock.”

“It’s no wonder,” Silas remarked. “I’ll see if I can find out who Logan is. He wasn’t one of the guys we were after, was he?”

“Don’t think so,” Kellan replied, and then I was being lifted into strong arms and cradled against a warm chest. “Who’s Logan, sugar?” His big hand was almost large enough to span the circumference of my thigh.

“Omega,” I whispered, turning my face into his neck and breathing where his scent was the strongest. I barely felt the pain anymore.

“Shit,” Silas hissed. “I’ll see if I can find him. They’re still sorting out the mess inside. Hard to tell who’s a victim and who’s the bad guy.”

“I’m gonna go out on a limb and say an omega isn’t a bad guy,” Kellan drawled, frustration and bitterness bleeding into his words.

Silas gave a snort of agreement. “Probably right. You good here?”

“I’m taking her to the helo,” Kellan said, the tenor of his voice sending vibrations through his chest that tickled my body. “Tell Crew about Jude, and that we’ll see him there.”

“Will do, brother. Take care of her,” he added softly.

Kellan didn’t reply as he turned and started walking away. I snuggled deeper against him, my body exhausted and completely drained. A sob caught in my throat, and Kellan made a quiet sound a second before warmth vibrated through me.

He was purring for me, the gentle sound soothing the frayed edges of my nerves. Within seconds, I was asleep.
