My alpha rumbled, wanting to get to her, but the woman in front of me wasn’t moving a damn inch. And while I could easily overpower Tweedle Dumb and Dumber, I couldn’t exactly break down hospital doors trying to get to her.

Right?

I frowned, mentally running through the scenario of punching my way through the halls like a one-man wrecking ball. It had merit until I realized I’d probably scare the shit out of women and children, and my mate wouldn’t like that.

Barely two hours after meeting my mate and she was already changing me for the better.

“Listen,” my gaze flicked to her nametag, “Betty, all I need is to know where my omega is.”

She arched a thin brow. “Then surely you know your mate’s last name.”

I bared my teeth at her, trying to think of another excuse when a wave of panic slammed into me. I spun to see Crew bursting through the doors at the end of the hall. In his black t-shirt, tactical pants, and kevlar, it was no wonder people cleared to either side of the hallways to avoid him.

“Where’s Jude?” he demanded, somehow managing to look like an enraged bull and a wounded puppy at the same time.

“Surgery,” I answered.

He swore under his breath, then followed up with, “Rhett?”

I winced a bit because I’d left him to go to the bathroom and then gotten carried away asking Betty about Hazel’s whereabouts. “They gave us one of the pack waiting rooms to hang out in until Jude is out of surgery.”

Crew nodded, motioning for me to show him where Rhett was.

I shot Betty one last look that generally scared the shit out of people, glaring when she smirked and waggled her fingers. Scoffing, I walked back to the private waiting area to show Crew where our other packmate was. When we stepped inside, I felt like shit seeing Rhett sitting alone, his elbows braced on his knees and chin resting in his hands. He just stared at the floor, but jerked when we came in.

His face dropped when he realized it was just us, and not the doctor with an update.

Crew brushed by me and yanked Rhett up into a rough hug. “Any word?”

“No,” Rhett muttered, pulling back and sitting down again. “What’s going on back at that… what the hell are we calling it?”

Crew scrubbed a hand down his face. “I don’t even fucking know. Silas told me Jude was shot and Oak told me to go.”

Rhett gave an absent nod. “He’ll handle shit.”

Crew’s phone rang and he grimaced before silencing it. At my curious look he replied, “Director.”

“Fuck,” I groaned, leaning against the closed door. “He’s already up your ass?”

“We raided a private commune with known ties to arms dealers, and now omega trafficking, and blew it when their leader got away. We’ve got five dead bodies, over a hundred victims that need immediate help with relocation, medical, and probably psychological counseling.” Crew shook his head. “It’s a clusterfuck.”

“Do you need to get back to the office and start working on reports?” Rhett glanced at our leader.

Crew met his gaze. “Fuck the paperwork. I’m not going anywhere until I know how Jude is. This pack is more important than anything else.”

I cleared my throat. “About that.”

They both looked at me, confused and curious.

“It’s about the girl we found,” I started. “Woman. I mean, the woman we found.” I rubbed my palms on my pants, my heart pounding. I felt like a kid with my first crush, but this was so much bigger than that time I accidentally got a glimpse of Miss Crenshaw’s lacy bra when she bent over to pick up something.

This was our goddamned mate. Our fucking scent match.

Rhett practically snarled. “Fuck her.”

My spine snapped straight, irritation rolling down my back. “What?”

“She’s the reason we’re in this mess.”
