From the doorway, a smile tugged at Crew’s mouth. There was no denying the softness in his eyes as he watched us reunite.

He’d done this. He’d brought Calla here… for me.

“I’ll give you two some space,” Crew told us. “Are Mom and the dads in the waiting room?”

Calla twisted and nodded at him, still not letting me go. “Yeah. We didn’t want to overwhelm Hazel, so they’re waiting.”

“Your parents came, too?” I whispered, stunned.

Calla turned, turquoise blue eyes wide. “Of course they did. We took the company plane as soon as Crew called. We’ve actually been here for a few hours, but Crew said you needed to rest.”

“She does,” Crew added firmly, his brows low with warning. “Don’t tire her out, Cal.”

Calla rolled her eyes with a grin. “I’ve got her, Crew. Go check in with your team or boss or whatever you need to do. Hazel and I are fine, big brother.”

Crew’s expression softened before he nodded and left, closing the door tightly behind him.

Calla immediately whirled to me. “Hazel… I don’t even know what to say.”

My gaze dropped as she studied me with this twisted mash of sadness and pity. “What did, uh, Crew tell you?”

She sucked in a deep breath. “That his team was involved in a mission and you were being held captive?”

I gave a slow nod.

“Son of a bitch,” she hissed. “I knew your uncle was an asshole, but I never… Haze, I swear I tried to find you. I asked Crew to try and find you. I asked Daddy to hire a private investigator…”

“You did?” I looked up.

Calla looked devastated. Her perfect little nose was red at the tip, the way it got when she was holding back tears. “I did, and I’m so sorry. I should’ve done more. I’ll never forgive myself?—”

“No.” I grabbed her hands. “Calla, no. You had no way of knowing… where I was.” I couldn’t bring myself to tell her all the details. Maybe someday, but not today.

Sitting here with her even now felt like a dream that could vanish any second.

“Crew also said,” she paused, licking her lips. “He said that you’re an omega?”

I flinched at the cursed word. “Yeah.” There was no hiding the bitterness.

“That’s… wow.” Calla looked stunned. “I mean, your parents were betas, and the odds of you being an omega must’ve been, like, a billion to one.”

“Lucky me,” I muttered, running a hand through my hair and wincing when I felt the tangles. I needed a shower.

Calla exhaled. “Okay. It’s going to be okay. Being an omega isn’t all bad.”

Something in her tone caught my attention. Was she trying to convince me… or herself?

“We’ll get you home and take care of you,” Calla decided. “We can find you a pack—if you want.”

“I’m kinda surprised you don’t have a pack,” I admitted. “You were all about that pack life when we were kids.”

Her jaw tightened. “Yeah, well, like you said. We were kids. Things change.”

Okay, clearly that was a sore subject. Best friend rights usually came with permission to prod at stuff like that, but I wasn’t entirely sure where we stood.
