CHAPTER 15

Georgia

“But why did he leave, Mama?” Dillon asked for the tenth time since we’d come home from dinner at McDonald’s finding the house empty.

Just like you wanted.

I’d been forced to remind myself of that small detail several times. And I would keep doing so until it stuck. Although the heartache from the way I’d tossed him out would remain for some time. While Dillon’s constant questions were to be expected given he wasn’t used to having any male figure in his life, he couldn’t have picked worse timing given Karen had met up with us at the carnival. The sentence was so grown up, my little boy’s eyes imploring. “Because Sabatino had to get back to his life.”

“Who is Sabatino?” Karen asked, not missing a beat.

“He was so cool. Max liked him too, Aunt Kawen. Mommy. Can I get some cotton candy?” Dillon spun around, looking up at me with a huge grin on his face. His dimples were highlighted in the bright sun of the beautiful Saturday afternoon. He was my little man, perfect and adorable. And he had a big mouth.

I reached into my pocket, grabbing a couple of dollar bills. The simple act reminded me that not only had he left the money I’d given him right where I’d placed it, he’d also added two hundred dollars. That meant he’d regained some of his memory. If he’d actually lost it in the first place. He could have been faking his injuries. No, he didn’t fake the gash on his head or the confusion.

I wasn’t certain of anything any longer.

I’d been forced to face the possibility he had been a plant for my ex, finding out what I was up to in my life. Okay, so it seemed a little farfetched, but I couldn’t put anything past the brutal man. Not one thing.

“You need to promise to eat your lunch if I buy it for you,” I told him, aware Karen was studying me intently.

“I will, Mommy.”

“Okay. Then let’s go.”

While he scampered off, Karen grabbed my arm before I could follow him. “Spill it. Who is this guy the little man mentioned?”

“No one. Just someone we met in the grocery store who asked me out. I’ve seen him before.”

“Uh-huh. Why do I have the feeling you’re lying to me?”

“I’m not lying.”

“Then why didn’t you go out with him?”

“Because he isn’t my type.” I offered a grin even though just talking about the gruff man brought another wave of loneliness.

“You actually have a type? I’d love to hear about it,” she teased.

She walked with me as I headed to the concession stand, waiting while I purchased a single spun cone. “Now, be careful eating this. Don’t get it on your clothes. Remember, we’re going on a couple rides in a little bit so eat up, kiddo.”

“I will, Mommy.” He twirled in a circle, giggling after doing so. It was during times like this I truly missed the boy having a father. At least he was so happy, something I could be extremely grateful for.

“You need to allow something special to happen in your life,” Karen told me.

“I already have something special in my little boy.”

“He is something, honey. He’ll be a young man before you know it. Not the same thing and you know it.”

I smacked her on the arm and we both laughed. “Don’t you dare say that again.”

“Which part?”

“Either one. I don’t have time for a man in my life.”

“Bullshit and you know exactly what I mean. The years are going to fly. What about you?”

“What about me?”
