“Don’t you want more children?”

A single snort left my mouth and we both laughed again. “Maybe. Who knows. Maybe I’ll have four or five.”

“That usually takes a man to make happen.”

“Not if I adopt. And there’s artificial insemination.”

“Not nearly as much fun. You are incorrigible. I don’t know what you have against men but one day I’ll get it out of you.” She glanced at her watch. “Meet up later for a drink? I need to get back to the booth.”

“How’s the book sale going?” Karen was always busy, including selling books for the school system. I admired her tenacity.

“Good. Incidentally, your books are selling like hotcakes. I really appreciate you donating some of your hard work.”

I laughed. “I only hope the little old ladies aren’t too embarrassed.”

“Are you kidding me? They’re the ones purchasing them.”

“Oh, really?”

“Yes, you have a fan club right here in lively Smith Mountain.” She narrowed her eyes. “Are you sure you’re okay? You weren’t yourself the other day and you’re certainly not now.”

“I’m okay. I just have a lot on my mind.”

“You’re sure it’s not this hot guy you’re pretending not to like?”

I wasn’t good at hiding anything, which was part of my concern. As heat began to shift across my jaw, images of Sabatino floated into the forefront of my mind. “Have you ever met anyone who in just a short period of time had the ability to change your entire outlook on life?”

“This Sabatino guy?”

“Just a dream I had.”

“Oh, your private fantasy. I can’t say I have. But if I do then I’ll know it’s Mr. Right. If he exists in anything other than books.”

“He exists,” I said absently, realizing what I’d admitted a few seconds later.

“Are you blushing?”

“Who, me? Of course not.”

“Uh-huh. I will get it out of you.”

“Get what?”

“Whatever you’re not telling me.” She winked and headed toward Dillon. “Have fun, kiddo. Maybe I can convince your mom to come out and have pizza with your old Aunt Karen.”

“Pizza. Pizza. Pizza. Pizza.”

“Great. Thank you very much, you terrible friend.” At least she could make me laugh.

“That’s what friends are for.” She started to walk away then turned around, so she wasn’t facing Dillon. “Did you hear about the other body that washed up on the shore on the other side of the lake?”

“No. Do I want to know?”

“Some drug lord out of Mexico. It’s going to be all over the news in the morning. At least we know why there were drugs on board. I can’t imagine our little town being a mecca of drugs.”

Swallowing hard, I could feel my pulse increasing. What had Sabatino been into? “Do they know who he is?”

“Some guy by the name of Raphael Garcia. Bad news. He’s the brother of some gang lord out of Mexico and California. That’s all I know at this point. Here I thought Smith Mountain was a safe place to raise a family.”
