Why wasn’t it gearing up? Was it on a timer?

“You always walk around without underwear?” I jerked around, squinting to look through the darkness beyond the dim light on top of the washing machine, even though I didn’t need to look to know that dark voice.

“What are you doing here?” I whispered.

“Couldn’t sleep.” He stepped out of the shadows and stepped towards me. He looked tired and casual in his white t-shirt and blue jeans. Did the light just spark? The static coming out of him shot to my naked core, in between my legs.

He stopped right in front of me. A few breaths in between us. If I leaned forward, my hair would nestle in his rough scruff. My hands itched to touch. Smooth or rough was the question floating in my head.

“I couldn’t sleep either,” I croaked.

“I know I promised you a week…just needed to see you.” His gaze fell to the open collar neck of my shirt.

The air was hot and heavy, with sex answering the call. It made me uncomfortable, and I didn’t like that. “I have decided,” I blurted out.

His hands landed on my waist, and he lifted me up, setting me down on the machine, putting me under the limelight of the dim bulb hanging on top.

Is that why it was burning hot?

“What have you decided?” he rasped.

When did we get so intimate? I watched as he put himself between my legs. When did it go from Mr Capizzi to this? Hardness inches from my core. Panic started settling in. It was going too fast, and he held the reins.

“Divya,” he held my face, looking into my eyes, “What have you decided?”

“I always thought I would marry for love, like my parents,” I mumbled.

“You are saving a child from her drug-addict mother. Your parents would be very proud of you, I am sure.”

“I don’t want to disappoint them,” I whispered, tears collecting, ready for release.

“Why would you? You need money now more than love. You get to keep their house, save Cora, and save for your studies. Winning everywhere.”

“It’s not like that.”

“It is,” he said tightly. “What. Is. Your. Decision. Divya.”

I drew a deep breath. This was it. “I will do it, but,” I rushed on, “I have a few conditions.”

He watched me, a muscle flicking on his jaw.

“Tell me.”

“I don’t want anyone to know…”

“Know we are married?” He scowled.

“No. That I am …. ugh… getting a reward,” I finished, a flush sliding up my body. It was already bad enough that I was accepting money, never mind everyone else knowing.

“Not an issue. This doesn’t leave this basement.”

I looked to the dark corners of the basement to pick up the courage for the next one. “No sex.”

“Not going to happen.”

“No. Sex,” I said, jabbing his chest with each word. His chest was hot, burning up with a fever we both had.

He looked down at my finger and grabbed it. Rubbing it in his hand, he asked, “Why not?”
