“Will do.”

He shut the door and turned to face her. “Now what would you like from room service? I want to make sure you have everything you need so you can heal.”

She smiled at him. He was so tempting. She wanted to tell him that she’d rather find out if he tasted as good as he smelled, but instead she gave him an order from a list on a tablet that he read to her, and then he joined her on the couch.

“You know something?” he said, facing her.

“What?”

“I can’t believe I found you. I want to know everything, Alanah, while we wait for your food.”

She inhaled, letting the sweet and spicy scent of him wash over her.

“Well, up until four days ago, I was arranged to be mated to an asshole named Cenrik.”

Chapter Six

Alanah ate her fill of the food brought up by the hotel’s kitchen. He’d known she was half-dead when he’d found her, but hadn’t really appreciated just how hungry she actually was until she’d fallen on the food he’d ordered like she thought it might disappear at any moment.

He could admit, at least to himself, that the happy little sounds she made as she ate affected him on a cellular level. He wanted her to make those sounds for him. But that would come later, when they’d gotten to know each other, and she was comfortable with him. That she understood they were truemates was enough for him and his beast, although nothing would make him happier than marking and mating her until they were both sated.

Her story had taken him on a rollercoaster of emotions, ending with him being fully pissed that she’d been so terribly mistreated by her people. She was safe now with him, but things could have turned out so much worse. If he’d been a day later, maybe even less, he wouldn’t have her right now.

“It’s pretty good luck my sister works at the hotel, huh?” she asked, setting the empty plate on the coffee table and leaning back against the couch.

“Very much so, but we would have worked it out one way or another.” He wasn’t sure what he would have done, actually. He didn’t think the NWFA lodgings were luxurious, and after Alanah had been so badly mistreated, he wanted her to have the best of everything.

She yawned, covering her mouth, then turned her head to look at him. “What now?”

“You should rest.”

“Just because I yawned?”

“Because you were mistreated for four days, and that would stress anyone’s body and mind.”

“I am tired,” she said, her voice going low. “But I think I’d like to clean up first. I must smell awful.”

“Not at all,” he said, being entirely honest. She smelled like the woods and sunshine, earthy and sensual.

The bird chirped from its perch on a lamp.

She chuckled.

“Does he have a name?” he asked.

“They don’t name themselves, they’re not like people. I could give him a name, but it wouldn’t really mean anything to him. Plus, I’m planning to set him free tomorrow.”

“We could do that now,” he said.

“He wants to stay here tonight,” she said, her eyes lowering a little as she stifled another yawn. “The bowl of seeds you ordered for him was a hit and he wants to rest here and make sure I’m okay. He’s really very sweet.”

He looked at the small bluebird. It amazed him that his mate could talk to animals.

“What other kinds of fairy powers are there?”

She hummed. “My sister has power over plant life, she can make anything grow and so does my dad. My mom has the power over dreams, she can read peoples’ dreams and tell them what they mean and she can also alter them, make someone have bad dreams or good dreams. Most fairy powers are over natural things, so there are some who can control the air or water or the earth, those who can speak with animals or manipulate metal.”

“You said your king didn’t think much of your power, though? It seems awesome to be able to talk to animals.”
