“I can keep you where I want you and not let you go at all,” Ronan said with a low voice, his tiger intending to keep her safe no matter what.

Her eyes narrowed, then she sighed. “All right. I agree to those conditions.”

“Me too,” Serena said.

Ronan didn’t voice what was on his mind most: what if her parents didn’t need or want rescuing? Then it would all be for nothing.

A few hours after sunset, when the crescent moon was high overhead and the forest was nearly pitch black for lack of light, their group made their way through the forest toward the fairy commune.

Along with Sylas, who Ronan would never go to a fight without, Galen had recruited Alaric, Slade, and a handful of wolves. Everyone was wearing black, including the only two females: Alanah and Serena.

The females had cast a cloaking spell, which while he and the others could see them, rendered them invisible to fairy-kind. Since he couldn’t tell if it was working or not, he fucking hoped it was.

He had two large knives strapped to his thighs, and his cat was ready with claws and fangs if necessary.

The females stopped and faced each other, grasping hands and whispering. Their hands lit up like they were covered in red mist. When they finished speaking the spell, which he knew was for locating their parents, the red mist moved away from them in a thin thread, weaving its way through the dense forest.

Sylas hummed and then whispered, “That’s fucking cool as hell.”

“Indeed.”

“We’re ready,” Alanah said. “Let’s see what happens.”

The knot in Alanah’s gut made her think that something terrible was going to happen, but she didn’t know what. It was more than just worrying that they’d be discovered, but she couldn’t put her finger on the cause. Maybe it was simply because she was sure the fairies were behind the bombs at the hotel, and she was itching to get revenge on her mate’s injuries, even though they’d healed quickly.

Pushing her worries aside, she focused on the magical thread which would lead them to her parents. Everyone was quiet. She could hear the occasional unhappy snarl from not only Ronan, but also Galen. She felt bad that they weren’t thrilled with the circumstances, but she couldn’t put to rest her worries that her parents were harmed until she saw them herself.

It took some time to slowly make their way through the forest. The location spell wasn’t known for being fast, and they were trying their best to be silent so the patrols didn’t get wind of them within the forest.

They approached her parents’ home, a quaint bungalow covered with moss and fairy flowers, nestled among other similar homes on a cobblestone street. There were no lights on, not even a candle flickering.

Something hissed, and a lantern flared to life, revealing her parents standing on the porch. Her dad set the lantern on a small table.

“Hello, daughters.”

“I thought they couldn’t see you,” Ronan said.

“We’ve been tracking our daughters since they left the commune, the cloaking spells don’t counteract the trackers. We knew when you entered the forest, and we know where you’ve been,” her dad said.

“Why were you tracking us?” Serena asked. “It wasn’t a secret where I was.”

“We wanted to know if you ever came back into the commune, since you were forbidden,” her dad said.

“I wasn’t,” Alanah said. “When did you track me?”

“After we were let out of the cell, we placed a tracking spell on you,” her dad said.

Something clicked for her.

“You were let out? Set free while I nearly died?” she almost shouted.

“You should have done what was required of you,” her dad said with a sniff. “You could have had a good life.”

“I didn’t want to be with Cenrik, he’s an awful male. How could you even want that for me? Or Serena? Mom?” she pleaded as disbelief warred with the truth before her.
