“You feel so good, Maddy,” he whispered, his voice a little gruff, emotion darkening his eyes as he gazed at her.

“You feel dangerous and intoxicating,” she said.

He smiled, his eyes locking on hers as he trailed a finger down her cheek, his touch tender and lingering, then he hooked his knuckles under her chin and lifted her face. His breath feathered across her lips for an instant, then his mouth touched hers with infinite gentleness. It was as though she was insulated from every other sensation except that, and she closed her eyes letting go of every conscious thought. His warmth and strength surrounded her, his touch like silk against silk, yet for all that softness, there was an underlying power, a depth of feeling. When he made love to her, he always made her feel that.

His gentleness mesmerized her, binding her to him with threads of sensation, and she moved closer, wanting to hang on to all the poignant feelings his tenderness awakened in her.

That’s what she wanted from him. She didn’t want to get so immersed in her own responses and sensations that she lost contact with his. Tonight, she wanted awareness: awareness of him, awareness of the infinite gentleness in his very touch, awareness of how cherished he made her feel.

Sliding her hand across his naked chest, she stepped back and with four pulls, her bikini slipped from her body. “That pool looks inviting,” she said.

He pushed off his trunks, his erection thickening between his thighs, and followed her to the lip of the plunge pool. The water made her gasp as she dropped into it, Shark right behind her. Her nipples were so tight they hurt.

He clasped her, sliding them to the edge, pressing her against it as his head lowered. She groaned as his hot mouth covered her taut peak. She pushed her hips forward, seeking the sweet, hard length of him. She wanted his mouth on her, the heat of him between her legs, buried deep inside of her. She groaned in deep satisfaction as he laved her straining nipple with his tongue and tugged gently with his teeth until she released a low, breathy moan, moving back and forth between them.

He spun her around, cupping her breasts, fondling them, and lightly pinching her nipples before skimming his hand lower, along her belly and down to her aching sex. She rocked frantically against his hips.

He whispered her name, locking her hips against his as he tried to still her movements, but Maddy continued her tormenting rhythm. A low sound vibrated in his chest as he released his hold on her, and she launched an assault on his senses as she settled deeper on him. A tremor coursed through him, and she felt him struggle against the need she was creating in him, then he surrendered to it.

She experienced a rush of emotion, so overwhelming that it left her unsteady, but she forced her body to respond, moving against him, pushing him deeper and deeper into sensations.

His skin was searing hot, his body hard all over. Especially his erection nestling so insistently against her spread thighs. His groan vibrated along her back as he slid in an excruciating inch. She arched her bottom against his hips, seeking more, just as he surged forward and filled her.

Overwhelmed by all the feelings she had for him, she leaned into him, giving him the full depth of her as she arched back. His slow, gyrating thrusts gradually gave way to deeper, heavier lunges that possessed and claimed her in such a raw, aching way. She was so close, and she could feel how on the verge he was. His thighs tightened along the backs of hers, his hot, damp, panting breaths rushing against the side of her neck, along with the arousing scape of his unshaven jaw.

His hand slipped to her core, and she could no longer hold back as they climaxed, the exquisite pleasure mixing with her soul-deep feelings. With Max, she had only touched on her capacity to give. With Shark, she tumbled over the edge into something beyond her imagination.

This was a feeling filled with a deeper, stronger emotion that she embraced as she lost herself to him. This was it, the reason she had this aching need to be close to him, to touch him, to be there for him in every way.

It wasn’t just love. It was jumbled up with trust, need, want, a hunger for his soul, and a hunger for him to claim hers.

Still in the water, Shark cradled Maddy against him, breathing hard, a protectiveness welling up in him. He finally had to acknowledge to himself that this woman was special in a one-in-a-lifetime way. She had gotten him to tell her about his past, not only that, but he’d wanted…ached to tell her everything. He didn’t want to hold back with her. But that little-boy fear in him was still there, still real. It hid in the shadows of his pain, humiliation, rejection, and loss.

His motto for so long had been what’s the point of acknowledging all the good things in life when there was so much bad? Yet she was showing him so much good. He’d never been a glass-half-full kind of guy, especially with being a SEAL. Where he went and what he did for a living there was sure to be strife, desperation, and casualties where innocents often took the brunt of any conflict. It was easier and safer to expect pain and disaster than it was to be hopeful. But, damn Maddy, he was finding it difficult not to be hopeful here.

Her confessions regarding her past relationships showed him she was a woman who was also trying to find her way. He wasn’t going to judge her actions against his own because Maddy was not him. She seemed pretty broken up about what had happened to Max, and even though his heart went out to the guy as losing Maddy must have hurt, he couldn’t be sad that it hadn’t worked out for them. Maddy would have been off the market and this…this complicated, jumbled-up mess of emotions with her wouldn’t have happened.

Shark didn’t want to analyze why that thought relieved him so much. He didn’t want to give a damn about her past social life with other men, and he definitely didn’t want to think about another man touching or kissing her the way he had. But after having tasted what it was like to be with her both in and out of bed, he was beginning to care too much.

She was also making him look at himself through a microscope, and as a SEAL, one who embraced growth and mental toughness, he was starting to understand why he had been aloof with his teammates, causing problems with their cohesion. He realized his actions had been about self-sabotage.

Deep down he thought he didn’t deserve such a prestigious position with these honorable and dedicated men. But he wasn’t that fucked up, unwanted, neglected kid anymore. He was a man who had the right to make his own decisions about who he wanted to be. He was a SEAL who had worked hard as hell to embody all that fighting force’s edicts, and he was Maddy’s lover who was falling for this maddening, beautiful, outspoken woman and considering himself fucking lucky.

He was in a FUBAR situation—fucked up beyond all recognition.

He slipped his arms under her legs and her back, rising out of the water. It streamed off them as he walked to one of the lounges and set her down. He grabbed up a towel and started to wipe her down. Her face was flushed, and her luminous eyes watched his every move. In that brazen, unapologetic way of hers, she followed his pecs, all the way down his abdomen, past his navel, to his semi-hard junk. “You enjoying the show,” he muttered gruffly.

“Are you kidding? Not many women get to be with a man like you. All I can say is hoo-yah and thank you very much Uncle Sam for your impressive muscle investment.”

“Muscle investment? You boiling all military men down to a muscle investment?”

“Hey, it’s part and parcel of the whole military gig, isn’t it?” She smoothed her hands over his shoulders. “An important part. Just as important as your brain.”

“My body is more important than my brain?”

“Sure. You can think all day about doing the impossible. Your mind could embrace all the scenarios—PT, lifting weight, swimming, diving, obstacle course, calisthenics, parachuting, and running and gunning, but without your body, you’re kind of dead in the water…” She gave him a smirk. “So, to speak.”
